Plays TV shows but not Movies

I have PlexConnect on an ATV2 connecting to my main PMC. It connects, all the categories and options are there under the trailers app, I can watch a tv show (even start at the first episode of a season and it runs through them all like a playlist) with no issues. When I try to watch a movie, it will start, play for maybe 1-2 minutes, give me the spinning thing, then jump back out to the menu. I've restarted the ATV and my PMC machine (Mac Mini, quad core) and I get the same issue. I've tried several different movies and it's the same for all of them.

I can use my iOS devices no problem and I can use AirPlay to get the movie playing through that ATV.  But if I use PlexConnect, no dice.

Anyone seen this or have any ideas?

What codecs and bit rates are the movies vs TV shows

Started having a similar problem 2 days ago. TV shows are fine and movies scan without issue in PMS. All items play fine in a browser on the server. Selecting any movie in PlexConnect .5-dev on my aTV3 immediately displays the message "Trailers is not available. Please try again later."

Broad mix of codecs and bit rates in both folders.

Checked and rechecked all possible permissions issues. Cleared all caches. Rebuilt the Movies directory. No change.

Next step is to recreate certificates unless someone knows what is actually happening.

Have you rebooted the ATV?

Certificates are needed for FIRST contact of aTV with PlexConnect. As long as you get the movie list and are able to replay TV Shows,  redoing those wouldn't change a thing.

Thanks, guys. I don't want to hijack sleake's thread. My post was meant as a 'me, too' heads-up.

For me, ATV has been rebooted multiple times since it began. Server, too. I'll skip the certificate process on it's own but may reset ATV to factory defaults and start fresh with the latest (7.0.2) software.

It feels like a permissions issue (Yosemite 10.10.1, late 2011 quad core Mac mini) but I see no issues - they are as they have always been. I ran Disk Utility 'repair' a couple times anyway, anyway. Knew it was useless but this issue seems to defy logic.

sleake, any progress on your problem?

You’re not hijacking. It’s good to know I’m not alone and having more than one set of eyes is s good thing.

I have rebooted the ATV and the Mac Mini a couple of times each. No luck. My next check is to ensure PlexConnect is current so ill refresh from GitHub. PMC is current.

is there a log that might show what is going in or one that can be turned on to help with this?

sleake -

your signature states: 2 aTV2s with Plex 0.11.0b2

This would push your issue into the "native client" section: https://forums.plex.tv/forum/76-apple-tv-2nd-gen/

Over here we discuss PlexConnect only, for more info see my signature.

What exactly is your setup, what hardware/software is involved? See https://forums.plex.tv/topic/69410-read-before-posting/, too.

Sorry, moved to PlexConnect and didn't update my signature. See my original post. I stated what I am using. ;)

I did a bit more playing and at the moment it seems it is only 1080p that is having trouble. I tried 720p movies and it seemed ok. I need to try others to see if that is the case. My PMC machine is an i7 quad core and when using it in my main HT setup, have iPhones streaming it doesn't break a sweat. So I'm pretty sure it's not PMC or the PMC machine. Are there settings or such that I am missing on the ATV to control how it handles the content?

ATV2 might go into overload... try to limit allowed bandwidth - there are some options in PlexConnect/settings/transcoder section.

Thanks. I'll give that a try when I get home from work tonight.

Sleake, I don't think an ATV2 can handle 1080p, just 720.

It starts playing for a minute or so and stops. If it can't handle 1080p at all, I would assume it wouldn't play at all. (When I was using the jailbreak solution with Plex 0.11.0b2, it played 1080p so don't think it is a hardware issue.)

Looking at PlexConnect on my main machine, there is a setting in the config file for remote bit rate and that is set to 720p 3Mbps. So technically it should be transcoding and sending what the ATV needs/can handle. Maybe this part isn't working correctly?

Is anyone able to play content that is originally 1080p on an ATV2 with PlexConnect?

It will be transcoding so sounds like the PMS cpu is not up to the task of transcoding the 1080 content so the Ouse your seeing is waiting for the next section to be transcoded

I appreciate your input but my PMS machine is a late 2011 Mac Mini 2.3 gHz i7 Quad Core with 16 gb RAM. I have been able to have it transcoding for 4+ iOS devices, playing a 1080p on the local client (PMS and PHT are on the same machine for my main HT setup) and streaming to another client on the same network, all at the same time and it barely broke a sweat. I doubt it is the CPU.

It's not that it is waiting for the next section to transcode. I've seen and understand that issue (which is why I went to the quad core a couple of years ago). It just stops and either kicks back to the menu or the light on the ATV2 starts blinking and it reboots/restarts. I just had this happen on a 720p movie, so it may not be just 1080p.

Is there any logging that is done or that can be turned on?

perperp - have you had any luck or made any progress?

ATV2 might go into overload... try to limit allowed bandwidth - there are some options in PlexConnect/settings/transcoder section.

Ok, a little hard-headed, sorry. I went into the settings and changed the transcoding to 720p/4.0Mbps. Seems to be working at the moment. I'll let it play for a bit longer, then try some other items.

I’ve been using Showbox instead of Plex. It is working great. It offer free streaming on Android devices, Firestick/TV and all Smart TV.
