PlayStation 5 Playback Issues (Buffering and Color Issues)

PlayStation 5 Issue 1: Buffering

While watching a 1080p video after approximately 15 minutes of flawless playback the PS5 app started buffering and pausing the video constantly. Restarting the app did not fix the issue.

I switched to a Chromecast player to see if the issue was reoccurring also there, but had no issues with the playback of the same file on that device.

The Plex server is used on a local wireless AC network and all players are set to play the original quality with direct play enabled. I observed that the server was transcoding for the PS5 although it is on the same local network. I don’t know if that is normal for some devices.

Tested video parameters are:

PlayStation 5 Issue 2: 4K Video Color Issue

When playing 1080p video files on the PS5 there are no display issues, except for the buffering issue mentioned above. But when trying to play 4K video files the colors are oversaturated and burned to the point where the videos are unwatchable.

The PS5 is connected to a non-HDR TV and I don’t know if the issue is somehow connected to that.

On other devices I don’t observe color issues (e.g. Galaxy Tab S7 or the Plex server itself connected to an old non-HDR LCD monitor).

In the settings of the PlayStation 5 itself it is not permitting any changes to the HDR settings, they are grayed out as it is automatically detecting and displaying that the TV is not supporting HDR functions.

Tested 4K video parameters are:

  • Duration 2:57:04

  • Bitrate 6384 kbps

  • Width 3840

  • Height 2160

I believe the color issue may be related to the always on hdr option if the ps5. I’ve read a few issues about that. While the old PS4 option flexed well between hdr and non hdr, the new setting seems to not work with plex.

In the display settings of the PS5 console it shows that HDR is off as the TV is not supporting HDR.

I am having the same buffering and color issues.

Same here. If I seek the video at all I run into an endless buffer. Which makes skip intro completely worthless.

Same. Sometimes changing the bit rate of video during buffering, helps it resume play. But most of the time it doesn’t. :frowning:

I’m have the same issues with buffering and color. The only additional comment is the color saturation also exists in some of my older content with lower resolutions as well. I do not have hdr tv and it is turned off in the ps5 settings.

When I direct play something on PS5 it’s all super red for some reason. If I force a transcode the color is fine.

Direct stream on I get a green garbage encode. With it off I have buffering issues over gig LAN.appears unusable on PS5 to me at the moment. Color issues as well but seems to be a coin flip versus color offset and full blown wrong codec or a blinking buffering icon

I have the same issue. Anyone knows how to fix it?

This issue exists even after todays update as well, not to shatter your hopes. After some content direct plays it eventually after 20-30 seconds buffers, then endless goes through a pausing and playing again cycle. The moment it’s switched off of direct play, it works flawlessly.

Same issues. Has this been acknowledged?

Same color issue for me with old Animaniac series (not the reboot). I have a 1080p LG Oled TV with no 4K nor HDR. Other Plex apps (ie. smart TV’s) do not have the issue.

same colour issue here even if i turn off hdr seems to be happening on all files for me
