Please fix the way "UNAVAILABLE" is shown for shows with just 1 episode missing

Problem description:

  • TV Show with multiple episodes

  • 1 episode has 2 version files Eg 480p, 720p: 1 version was deleted. 1 still exists

  • This can be verified by clicking “get info” on the episode & see only 1 version shows “unavailable”

  • Plex displays the entire show as UNAVAILABLE

  • Plex does not show that episode as unavailable on the “episodes” list so user doesn’t know which episode is problem

  • user has to manually do “get info” and check every episode until find which episode has a missing file

This is very confusing and misleading

Suggestions:

  • Update: Why does Plex Media Server say my content is unavailable? | Plex Support
Explain about this reason - that an episode could be missing 1 version but another one exists still so it looks like nothing is wrong

  • update the Plex interface show warning symbol on the episode which has missing file (when it has another alternative format that is not missing).

  • show a warning message “version missing/unavilable” when hover on the specific episode

  • show a dashboard page to cleanup missing versions of episodes centrally without this manual show by show episode by episode method.

  • Change the TRASH icon on the show art to a warning symbol.
It doesn’t make sense you show the trash icon for the whole show just because 1 version of 1 episode is missing

hope this help someone

If you remove media (upgrade from one resolution to another) and the file name is different

Always “Scan Files”.

You can setup the server (Settings - Server - Library - Show Advanced)

  1. Automatically update my library when changes detected
  2. Empty Trash after every scan.

If you setup automatic, what you experienced will not happen.

Thanks. My settings already had automatic scan.
But i enabled empty trash.

Suggest add this to the support guide for that issue too

When you dig deeper into the series, does the missing episode show ?

AFAIK, the red trash can will show if something is missing. As you dive deeper into the structure, the granularity refines and identifies the singular item when it gets to the bottom of the pile.

No it doesn’t
So i think is a bug also because i expected same
Here is the structure i had

Tvshow page
Shows red trash icon on tv show logo

Click season 1

Episode list
Episode 1: 1 file missing, quality updated
NO trash icon

Click get info and confirm file missing.

So must be a bug?

Thanks.

It shows there is missing content at the show level

But NOT –

Which specific episode is missing after you drill down into it.

Thank you.

I will replicate, grab logs, and submit.

Correct yes let me know if you have trouble replicating.
Unfortunately I fixed it now before taking screenshots etc but you have correctly understood what i described.

PLease include my suggestions from the first post also as all of them would help make the user interface clearer to understand & resolve these issues.

it would be nice to have a “cleanup” page showing missing media etc as a bonus but just improving the error display etc would be great.

Separately I had a weird bug connected to this today:

I deleted a TV show (from the tv show page) - so all 8 episodes gone
using plex TV android app
the show disappears from android app view

I login to plex web browser on computer and the show is visible & has Trash Icon on it.
(This is before I enabled auto empty trash).

I then deleted it again using plex web.

Still strange though that plex web would display the show when it was deleted correctly through PLEX android tv app…

@fatjoez

The Plex/web client caches plus it doesn’t update like the dedicated device apps do.
I don’t know why it is that way but it is. I think it has something to do with limitations in the scripting the browsers have (lowest common denominator)

It used to show at the invidual episode level; that was handier when debugging issues when moving media from one drive to another. You definitely don’t want to empty the trash – you lose all the watch data when that happens if the episode is legitimately missing on both sides.

I can understand it being off by default (performance reasons), but if there was an option to turn that on … that would be handy.
