I know you aren’t fully to blame for this insane choice to blast controls for media to every Chrome instance on the local network, but you need to provide at least an option in the Chromecast Google TV application to turn it off, if not just disable it outright until Google themselves figure out what they are doing with it.
I live in a shared apartment and I’m not going to dictate what my flatmates use as their browser, but I don’t want controls to be given to them to mess with the media stream.
I am writing in here to at least give an option because no other app I have installed on my Chomecast with Google TV will do this (Twitch, Netflix and even Jellyfin which I was using before trying out Plex), so Plex must be playing some role in allowing this.
It just seem ridiculous that there can just be a set of unauthenticated controls handed off to anyone on the network just because they are using Chrome.
did you google this at all before ranting here?

Of course I googled it, all the results are talking about disabling from the Chrome browser itself and not on the application. I don’t have control over that, especially when it comes to my flatmates work devices, and a few of the articles say the chrome://flags that allowed you to disable it have been removed at some point anyway.
I have “Let others control your cast media” set to “Never” on both the Google Home app and on the Chromecast with Google TV, but that only mentions Android devices.
this behavior does not occur on my setup but perhaps i do something different then what you described above. when i cast something from my phone to my shield it doesn’t give controls to everyone that has a chrome browser open on the lan.
I am playing directly via the app installed on the Chromecast with Google TV, however, casting via the Plex Android app exhibits the same issues.
I’ve asked on the Google forums as well so I’ll close this issue if I find out more information and it cannot be handled app-side
interesting. just pulled my gtv out of my bag and played some content and i see what you are saying. will see if i can get it to not do that but seems like google just turned something on thats half baked. if i pause something i can’t play it again in the chrome browser. the pause button disappears and no play button appears…
It is odd. You’re probably right though, Google and “half-baked” go hand in hand after all haha
Hopefully I get a reply on the Google forums post with more information
Thanks for testing
yes they probably implemented something in chrome browsers without realizing that the only option we have for the media control is tied to android devices. this should be a chromecast setting not a plex one imo,
did this just recently occur? my chrome had an update earlier today and i dont recall seeing this previously.
but it is doing this on my shield tv as well. so its not just CCGTV related.
im going to make a post in the shield forums as well.
I’m not 100% sure. I don’t use Chrome as my primary browser, however, my flatmate has mentioned it before with YouTube, but as Jellyfin doesn’t do it and we don’t use YouTube a whole lot on the TV it didn’t really come up often. I switched to try Plex recently and he mentioned it doing it with Plex.
I’m not sure if my Chromecast was updated or not, I manually did an update today so I don’t know if it was automatically updating, if not it could’ve been very out of date.
I’ll keep the thread updated if I hear anything on the Google forums
youtubetv and prime video also have the same issue. netflix is the only other streaming app i have and it doesn’t have the issue as you already mentioned.
@anon18523487 is this something you have any idea about? it seems it is app related as certain streaming apps create control in chrome while other streaming apps don’t, each of which support cast to tv.
can you take screenshot of what you are talking about in chrome where these show up. I am playing something on my CC/GTV right now and i see nothing in my browser
Hi,
I unfortunatley haven’t recieved any information from the Google forums yet.
I have attached a screenshot of the controls that show up

These are present on every chrome instance opened on the local network and clicking “Stop casting” closes out of the Plex application completely.
Chrome version is: 109.0.5414.120
I assume this is the lastest as I had to download it to see the controls for myself as my primary browser is Firefox
Ok thanks. been playing around and i think I have it.
On the GTV go to Settings>System>Cast>Let others control cast media
change setting to NEVER
Then go back to Setting>System and choose Restart. The NEVER setting did not stick and continued to show up in chrome until I restarted my GTV, so make sure you do that
Hmm… This didn’t work for mine.
The “Let other control cast media” has been set to “Never” since I got the device. I tried setting it to “Always” > restarting > changing it back to “Never” > restarting and the control still show up in Chrome regardless.
I’ll give the device a factory reset and see if the whole thing is just bugged (wouldn’t put it past Google)
OK. I think they are all already off for the weekend but I will see if any of our Android folks know anything about it. There is definitely something buggy on the Google side of things though I think. You are supposed to be able to change that setting to Never in the Google Home app on phone for device but that does not seem to work at all and reverts to “when casting” even though I set it to “Never” on device
Okay, thank you very much for your time and help!
I will keep the post updated if I hear anything back from my Google forums post I made.
Unfortunately, it seems doing a factory reset didn’t do anything.
ill try to test this out sunday as well. it does it on the shield too. and you shouldn’t have to set it to never anyway because the media is not being “cast” it is being played from an app. that should be a separate thing IMO but perhaps its not set up that way in android/google.
so netflix doesn’t display this behavior. but even if i cast something into netflix. it still doesn’t show up in chrome so its just not working at all for netflix for me. testing on the shield right now.
as i was typing plex showed up on chrome as if something was being played although the app but it hadn’t been open since last night on my shield and only something on netflix was playing. weird. definitely some wonky behavior.
It may be some issue with or implementation of Exoplayer which I think Netflix uses. Assuming youtube does as well.
