Please re-allow us to automatically download subtitles with the new Plex Movie Agent

Server Version#: 1.20.3.3437
Player Version#: 4.34.4

I just upgraded to the latest version of Plex and boosted my Movie libraries up to the new Plex Movie Agent and I noticed that subtitles no longer get automatically downloaded.

I noticed this topic on the same issue:

And the answer given was that this was intended, as the “Search…” feature allows you to select subtitles at playback time.

However, I would like to request the option to auto-download, all the same. Some of my Plex users are… less than literate when it comes to tech. In the Legacy agent, I have pre-downloaded English subtitles that either automatically forced, or are easily labelled “English” so they know “click this one button and they’re on.”

But I would really rather not have my users parse through OpenSubtitles weird naming schema, even with the scores. Especially since sometimes the search gets it completely wrong:

I know, I know “just click the 2nd option”, but imagine tech-illiterate grandparents trying to use Plex. And that’s just one example I saw, I fear there might be other movies with even worse search errors.

I would rather have the option to easily pre-download one subtitle file so that they easily know “this is the one to use”. And if it gets the wrong one, I can fix it for everyone at once, instead of telling all my users individually, “this is how to get the correct subs”. I understand I can do this on my own, going to OpenSubtitles.org and manually downloading them one-by-one, but I didn’t have to do that with the Legacy agent.

Huh, I didn’t even know that legacy agent could auto-download subtitles in the first place. Are you sure you didn’t use some plugin for that? If you did, they need to be updated for the new agent.

You could try installing/updating [REL] Sub-Zero 2.6.5.3247 - Subtitles done right. From my experience its matches are much better than of the Plex itself, anyway.

I don’t currently use plugins, but since the plugin deprecation there’s no interface for them. I heard that Kitana might help with that https://github.com/pannal/Kitana

Also if you use sonarr/radarr, you may just try bazarr, it has a lot of additional features and extended ui in comparison to what Sub-Zero offers.

Nope, no plugins. Just the built-in OpenSubtitles agent. Followed this guide when I set up my server

https://www.howtogeek.com/284125/how-to-automatically-download-subtitles-with-plex-media-server/

But the new Movie Agent doesn’t have the option to pull data from other agents. There’s no tab like this for the new agent:

I would also like to see this feature back, having to manually do it every time I need subtitles seems absurd when the process could’ve been done automatically. It also requires internet access, so in the event of your internet going down, if you were to use Plex locally this feature would not work.

agreed - for the life of me i cant understand why they would deliberately take away this feature making it such a pain now to download subs

Agreed please add back feature! =)

+1 still have to keep using the legacy agent because this feature is not available…

yes please

In the pinned thread about the new BETA Agent this is mentioned as “not available yet” … as well as a few other functions that aren’t implemented yet during the beta tests.

The work around mentioned there if you choose to use the BETA agent is to use the manual option to download subtitles in the language of your choice.

Please bring them back.
