Plex 5.18.1 now wants to transcode video

Server Version#:
Player Version#:5.18.1
I have a number of movies that are encoded with h265 main 10 and used to play just fine on my UA32M5500 FHD Samsung TV through Plex. But after upgrading Plex to the new client version 5.18.1 , Plex now wants to transcode these videos because It says video stream exceeded a max depth bit of 8. Yet the movie plays perfectly fine through the in-built dlna software. Is there a way to fix this, as my Plex server is not strong enough to transcode, even though it never needed to transcode these before.

In the Plex app, enable the option to send logging to your server. Play the video again. Let it play for about 30s, then grab the PMS logs.

Got the log. Still not clear why it wants to transcode. Can you provide me the xml info for that movie you tried to play?

I hope this will help, I think it’s what you want.
xml.info.zip (5.1 KB)

I have re-encoded my copy of the movie I am having problems with. I changed the bit depth from 10 to 8 and now the movie plays fine. It is still HEVC H265 but changed from Main 10 to Main. But as stated before, the movie used to play just fine on Plex 3.109.2 but not anymore on the lastest version. The only error I see in the info on screen during playback is that it states that the bit depth has exceeded 8 and therefor plex has to transcode and not direct play. So it looks like maybe plex have now put a limit on bit depth (But is there a difference between the UHD and the FHD plex clients - even though they are the same version 5.18.1, because the HEVC main 10 version plays fine on the UHD tv (Both Samsung TV’s))

Once month ago I posted the same issue: Samsung tizen client transconding 60p frame rate. I think that the problem is the framerate.

Check your PMS settings to see if you enabled HDR tone mapping.

No, they are the same, but FHD TVs don’t have the same capabilities, so some files may not play.

Huh. I didn’t think that older client supported hevc.

Thanks for your help. As stated earlier in the thread, the tv is able to play all these files via Dlna just fine but not with Plex. So this seems to be a Plex problem not the tv. I re sideloaded Plex back to version 3.109.2 and I am able to play the files just fine.

I have read the e manual for my tv and it states that is should play HEVC h.265 main and main10 so the problem I’m having playing main 10 movies through plex as long as they are under 60fps so definitely the problem I have has to be a plex problem.

Comparing to the DLNA is not equivalent. Their DLNA is capable of supporting software decoding of codecs that may not be supported by the hardware. Plex’s app is not able to do that and must follow the hardware.

You are right that FHD TVs should support hevc main 10. The team is investigating.

Thanks for that

I am now running 5.19.1 and Plex is still transcoding h265 main 10 video which my nas cannot handle, when the FHD tv can definately support hevc main 10 video.

I want to thank all people at plex, upon the installation of 5.20.1 I can now play hevc main10 files again without plex wanting to transcode the file on my FHD tv. Once again, thank you very much.
