The new movie agent is currently a bit stricter with naming, it requires the files be named exactly the same.
e.g.) your files would need to be named like this:
The Living Daylights (1987)/ The Living Daylights (1987) - 1080p.m4v
The Living Daylights (1987)/ The Living Daylights (1987) - 1080p.en.srt
An upcoming server version (1.20.3), which is in testing now, has some changes that makes this less strict and should work again with your current filenames.
Thanks @drzoidberg, however, even following your naming scheme in the current beta does not work.
I duplicated the srt files and named the duplicates exactly as the movie with a .en and for a forced sub .en.forced and both are still showing up as Unknown SRT after a library scan, metadata refresh, and analysis.
Updated to 1.20.3.3401 this AM, and while it’s good news about the sdh tag, sidecar subtitles are still showing up as Unknown SRT External files when you have movie files labeled with " - 1080p", “- 720p” and the subtitles are just “.en.srt” or “.en.sdh.srt”.
With the old agent they show up correctly.
For instance, let’s take a movie “The Princess Bride (1987)”.
I have both 2160 and 720 versions of this film in my library.
The files are named “The Princess Bride (1987) - 2160p.mkv” and “The Princess Bride (1987) - 720p.mp4”.
The sidecar subtitles are “The Princess Bride (1987).en.srt”
Using the old agent this works as expected, however with the new agent this subtitle show up as “Unknown External SRT”.
If I rename the srt file to either “The Princess Bride (1987) - 2160p.en.srt” or “The Princess Bride (1987) - 720p.en.srt” then it matches…but I have over one thousand movies in my library using the old format.
Updated to 1.20.3.3421 last night and that seems to have improved on the issue. SRT files without the “- 1080p” or “- 720p” are now being recognized. However, when attempting to add the “sdh” or “cc” tag to them, they revert to Unknown language. If I include the “- 1080p” or “- 720p” with the sdh tags, they load appropriately.

I have the same problem, I updated to the latest version today, but it was still showing as unknown. My movies are all perfectly titled. For instance: 21 Bridges.mkv and 21 Bridges.dutch.srt
For some reason Plex does not take my subs anymore. It shows them perfectly when I rename the srt file from 21 Bridges.dutch.srt to 21 Bridges.dut.srt
yes, I understand that now, I am gonna change all of them, but it’s weird that it accepted it and now it doesn’t. Especially because it still works on series
They recently changed the Agent for Plex Movie metadata, which is how the CC and SDH are supposed to work now (they just don’t in certain use cases right now).
The TV agent hasn’t been updated yet to the new format, which might explain why TV series are still working for you
The only reason I could think that it worked is because the 3 digit code for those languages you have all match to the first 3 letters of the language (dutch = dut, english = eng and turkish = tur), so it could have just been that Plex was ignoring the rest of the proper name. Just a guess and I could be completely wrong.
TV Series are still on the old agent as it hasn’t been updated yet (I think they plan on eventually updating that as well, at least I hope because the new movie agent matches much quicker, but per Plex, they don’t release a roadmap or future/upcoming changes until they are in public beta).
Copy, so that if we want to take advance of sdh or cc subtitles, we can no longer use a single srt file for all resolution copies of a film?
We now need a separate subtitle file for each version of a film even if the only change is optimized versions rather then actual content differentials? So if I were to store a UHD version, an HD version, and a mobile version of a film I would need to duplicate the srt file three times?
