Plex Alexa skill says playing but will not play to any player

Yeah, I don’t know what’s going on. If one works, the other should. The Shield is working for me, without a VPN. Have you tried turning off the VPN?

@anon18523487 Thanks for your consistent replies.

I can personally confirm play/pause/skip commands work while using and not using VPN across ALL devices. So my suggestion is that these 2 problems (mine and the nvidia shield) possibly have the same root cause.

Alexa accepts the request as we have all previously stated but does not redirect the request to front end app. The question that arises then is “does the request reach htpc/desktop apps at all?, as it reaches my firetv and android phone without no hiccups”
Thus mostly eliminating any problem with the alexa skill and therefore having the fault lie within the plex apps themselves.
Is there a difference in the routing of requests between the apps? do firetv and phone use roughly similar codes being android based (this would be in conflict with the Nvidia Shield not working however, @ak1 or do you have a custom OS?) VS that on a windows PC?

I may test this issue with a Linux distro in a few days and see if it remains present.

It does because music works. It’s something with the command for video. Yes, it is a Plex issue.

alexa tell plex to play start wars episode one, playing QI episaode 15
alexa tell plea to play star waes espisode one. ok…noithing happens
alexa play house season one episode one , ok enjoy season 3 episode 16 house nurses Brooklyn 99 …nothing happens
alexa tell plex to play bonkers disk one ttrack one, plays muisic by bonkers on the echo not plex

Both server and player are up to date on the same network and everything is wired not wireless
I keep giving these details and all that happens is the thread is closed due tyo lack of replies even the thread plex staff asked me to start and you replied on

I’m having almost the same issue. TV Shows with random episodes and Movies won’t play at all.

Play/Pause working perfectly.

@anon18523487 Please look into this matter.

Any progress? Any more logs or info I can provide? Thanks.

Sorry, no update. Still waiting for the devs to fix it.

I’m just chiming in as I began experiencing this only recently. I have been using Alexa with the Plex skill for over a year now. Always worked fine (with only one exception*). Just about a week ago, I began experiencing the same issue as in the OP; i.e., Alexa says, “Playing [requested music] on [Plex computer]” but no music begins. I’ve reset Alexa (power off/on), reset the host computer, disabled/enabled the Plex skill. Nothing has changed this behavior.

No issue accessing Plex from other computers on my network. Just the Alexa/Plex skill that stopped playing music.

I am not using a VPN. All devices/computers are located on my local network.

*The exception is that, once in a while she would respond that “The Plex server [server name] is available but remote access has not been enabled.” I would then repeat the request and it would successfully connect and begin playing. When this happened, I just assumed it was some kind of time-out issue. But, other than the need to occasionally repeat the command, it otherwise worked flawlessly.

First generation device?

Yes, the one I use for Plex is first-gen. I have several others that are 2nd-gen or later if testing with them is helpful.

Getting Plex to work on Alexa is usually frustrating, but since the end of September, the generation one devices all seem to refuse to work. I’ve been able to get 2nd gen to work, but I tend to have to go through the uninstall Plex skill, power cycle everything, re-install skill to get things working again.

Hi again,

It’s been yet another month. Can we please have some transparency on the priority and timeline for this? It’s been 10 months since this was reported and there hasn’t been any traction and I have to continually check-in and only be disappointed. Would you please raise this issue to the team and provide their direct response as to the status or why they will not be fixing it?

Thank you.

Confirmed that Plex works fine with my 2nd-gen and above devices. So, I just switched them around. If the devs would like some testing with a 1st-gen Echo, I’m willing to help however I can.

Plex is working fine on my 2nd gen and higher devices as well. 1st gen echo - no love. Linking this post from the general forum for first gen devices: Plex not playing music on first generation Echo devices - #6 by goellnjh maybe it will help @anon18523487 guide the devs to the issue. Thanks!

I have a single development - If I switch the SHIELD vlan to the same vlan as the Plex server, the SHIELD will work with Alexa. However, if I keep them on the same vlan, or put them on separate vlan’s the SHIELD stops working if I use a different WAN.
The iPhone works regardless of mixing WAN’s. This means there is still a bug in Plex because the SHIELD and iPhone are behaving differently depending on the network configuration, but there’s something to go on.

From looking at the logs, it appears that the SHIELD is trying to use a link to my server as public-ip.plex.direct whereas my iPhone is using lan-ip.plex.direct. This means the SHIELD is using the WAN and the iPhone is not.

Does the iPhone use different network discovery than the SHIELD? I have Avahi turned on for both vlans and with replicated mdns broadcasts between the two subnets.

Plex team is radio silent on this again.

This Alexa 1st gen problem appears to have arisen due to the expired Let’s Encrypt certificate on 9/30/2021. Appears that the Plex software used by 1st gen devices includes a reference to the bad cert.

I want to chime in with the what sounds like the same problem. I have two 2nd generation Echo’s running as a stereo pair with an Echo Sub. Always worked perfectly to have Alexa play music from PLEX from Windows 10 media server. For a long time now, Alexa recognizes the PC/Server, the song/album/artist titles, library radio, etc., it says it is now playing… then nothing ever happens, just silence. So frustrating. Doesn’t work at all. Used to work so great. Now I have two bookends and zero sound from my PLEX library going through the Echo devices. Talk to Alexa who responds perfectly, then… nothing. What changed? It is a PLEX pass feature now? An API issue? I don’t know where to turn. I’m going through the community threads and it appears I’m not alone. 10.22.2021

Not been working on my 3rd gen echo for months, despite several open threads

I hav e the same issue on my 1st Gen Echo. Alexa, acknowledges paying a song, then silence.
