Plex and Alexa have fallen out?

Hi, Plex worked fine on my Home network until the other day when it suddenly wasn’t able to ‘remote’ link to my server… Tried to find out why, only to find lots of old posts (years ago) about port-forward and such hoo-hah… Today, I see that Alexa now says that “This skill (Plex) is not currently available”. Anyone have any idea what’s going on?

I just noticed last night that my account was unlinked. I then had a hell of a time finding the skill in this new “improved” app that hides things you need and suggests ■■■■ you don’t.

I can’t find the Plex app in the alexa store in the app when I search, but if you go to Alexa+ Store > Settings > Original Alexa Skills, you can find your currently subscribed/installed Plex skill, and re-link your account there. I had to do it twice before it finally linked and I can use it again.

  • The fact that it unlinked on its own less than a month since it last unlinked is strange.
  • You claim the skill says it is unavailable (I didn’t see that in my app, it was just not in search).
  • That I can’t find it AT ALL in the Alexa+ store is scary.

I think we need some info from Plex about this.

This is what started it all for me… Note: this had previously worked just fine (ok, occasional issues like not finding any music or not being able to find Plex, but repeat requests eventually worked). I linked/unlinked repeatedly. Re-installed the Plex media server, etc - all the same…
Then, trying to link the skill I got a “This skill (Plex) is not currently available” message (sadly, I didn’t capture it at the time).
Now, I can’t see the skill at all!

This is the list after a search for Plex. It no longer shows in ‘My Skills’ either. (The Plex ‘app’ still shows up in the store - and still works on TV, but it also can’t find the music server).
To be fair, I didn’t have a subscription to PLex (though I took out a trial of the Remote Pass to see if that would help, it didn’t). But, it would be nice to have some explanation of why something that worked quite happily for a couple of years should suddenly just disappear ?
I’m surprised there hasn’t been more of an outcry? Is it just me!!

It’s likely to not be used that much. The Venn diagram of Plex server owners and Alexa users is not exactly a solar eclipse…

If you are unable to find your music via the Plex app on your “store” (iOS, I assume?) or the TV app, then you might have deleted your server. A “Re-install” of your server might have disassociated your account from the install (it would not have helped any troubleshooting issue, and should not have been attempted).

For now, since the Plex app seems to be missing from the Alexa+ store, there might not be anything we can do until we get hlep from a Plex employee, like (shamelessly) @BigWheel, who can hopefully look into this or pass it along to the appropriate location.

Look into getting your plex server working again with your TV and “store” app in the meantime. If you cannot access it normally, then you won’t have any luck at all getting it to work when this Alexa issue is resolved.

(Lastly, you should never need a Plex Pass or remote watch pass, or to even pay Plex at all, to listen to music.)

Im getting the same thing when im trying to re-link alexa after having a ton of remote access issues with plex

Just tried it this morning, and it had to be re-linked AGAIN. Something hinky is up.

So there have been quite a few posts about this, but not a single response from anyone at Plex?! WTF

I had this issue last night. Plex was working fine on my amazon echo since October 2025. It suddenly stated there was a problem with my plex credentials. Went to re-link the skill in alexa and it fails with: “Unable to link the skill at this time.” And now the skill shows as “
This skill is not currently available.” on both the alex app and on amazon. I mostly use this to play some rainsounds from plex. If this is not resolved, are there any similar devices that work better for this?

Update: Re-installed mt Media Server (having nuked everything bar my Plex login). So, it’s now working on the TV. Plexamp works on my phone (Android). (Oddly, the Plex app on the phone sees the server, but doesn’t want to connect - but Plexamp is fine, so all good).
But, the main point of setting up Plex was to have voice control on the Alexa devices (three of them!). I already had local access via menus on Musicast… And the missus prefers the voice options. :innocent:
Still nothing from Plex (officials) on the issue… And no apparent way of raising it with Amazon. As DivideBy0 says, maybe not enough users to be of concern. Maybe AI will sort it all out  .

Well I’m in the UK, we don’t have Alexa+

Skill has disappeared from the Alexa app

Found the skill on the amazon.com site ( linked from the Plex support page) from there as my account is .co.uk it tells me to use that. From there there there is no search option. Can’t be arsed to go through 33 pages to find out it isn’t there just like in te Alexa App.

I understand it we are very, very unlikely to hear anything from Plex, for anything let alone this issue.

Looks like they have completely nuked the Plex skill. Zero notice and worked last night (3-30-26).

Still works for me, as of 4/1/2026. Still have the skill on my account, it’s just not in the Alexa+ “store”.

Just spent half an hour arguing with google.ai about this. It seems to claim that with the recent (march 2026) change to more clients requiring the Plex Pass, that the skill now required it. That is incorrect, as music streaming should always be free, and that wouldn’t apply to most users in this post that have a plex pass. To add to that, it’s quite likely that most users are using Alexa to access a local server, not a remote server anyway.

Well, I do not wish to remove this app at this time to test, but the AI seems to think that Plex is still available in the “Original Alexa Skills” location in the app. It is where I had to go to re-link my malfunctioning Plex skill. Has anyone who lost the skill been able to locate it there besides me?

I get the “not available” message too. It was working fine for quite some time.

Is there another solution to playing my library of music? I just need my “green noise” to come from the Show. I play it at night to fall asleep. The green noise apps are not the same.

I did the recommended task of delinking first. Bad mistake. Now not found in any search in any destination. I am a Plex Pass subscriber, FWIW.

Went out to the Amazon skill forum. This was the reply.

Thank you for your interest in the Plex skill.

Try sending if from the Amazon store:

  1. https://www.amazon.com/Plex-Inc/dp/B01NBB1INY

  2. If that is not working consider Reporting Issues with a Skill here

But stopped. Suggestion #1 issued “Skill not found”. Suggestion #2 required one to find the Plex skill on the Android or IOS app to report it gone - a Catch 22.

Is the skill for Alexa created and managed by Plex or Amazon?

Almost certainly created and designed by Plex. But I’ll wager that this new Alexa+ store might have made an entire “store reset” where all developers must now re-design the skill and resubmit it to a new store. Plex might be silent on this front because they were blindsided by the new store and are working on it again.

Or they laid off the one employee who designed and implemented the original Plex skill, and NOBODY is in charge of Alexa integration. The silence over this from Plex is almost kinda funny at this point, if it weren’t for the fact it is now completely broken.

I have the same issue -

I every night use plex to play nighttime rain sounds to sleep. This is streamed through various Alexa devices. This has been very reliable with the occasional need to update credentials. Tonight (4/6/2026), I tried to update / relink to the alexa plex skill and says its not found.

I guess this confirms it this plex skill was removed? Any chance it will come back - I found pretty useful.
