Server Version#: 1.26.2.5797
Player Version#:9.2.1.32664
Plex Android App restarts during a search from any level. This started after the app was updated today May 25th 2022.
Both me and my brother are encountering identical problems on distinct android phones.
I am encountering the same issue on my Samsung galaxy Tab S7. It started before I updated the app so I updated it and still the same issue.
Media will still play if I select to continue watching something however the search function completely closes the app.
I have three users reporting this issue on Samsung devices (S21, S20+, S10+). Fixed two of them by having them join the beta in the Play Store which bumped them to 9.3.0.32768, released May 24th versus 9.2.1.32644 which was released on May 19th.
Some more data. I’ve back revved multiple versions and this issue exists at least back a few weeks.
EDIT:. Previous data was not accurate… updating…
The last version that seems not to crash on search is:
9.0.0.36716 I believe this is the last 9.0 release.
But I got really inconsistent results with all versions after this up to and including the current release. Sometimes I would need to uninstall and reinstall more than once and/or clear storage more than once.
The further back you go the less likely the issue appears to happen. I have also seen some crashes only on certain searches and other times it crashes immediately and other time only once you’ve clicked on a result. Sometimes it would appear to work fine on the first run of the app, or sometimes on the first search of a term. Subsequent identical searches however would cause the crash.
Regardless, it’s clearly an issue introduced with all releases starting in April. I did just upgrade today to server version 1.26.2.5797, so i don’t know if this can be related to that. I previously hadn’t upgraded for a few weeks so it may be some combination between the newer clients and the newer server version?
All I can say is after extensive testing it is definitely occuring on everything past the 9.0.0.36716 release. Whether or not it is also reliant on server version I am unsure, but as it is happening with the latest server version it is definitely an issue that needs to be addressed.
I was wondering whether I was the only one. I noticed that issue with every single search, starting yesterday (25 May). I uninstalled and reinstalled. It functioned well enough at first, but then four hours later, it blew up again. This morning I uninstalled and reinstalled all my Plex Media Server instances, after noticing that the server software had an update available. The update installed smoothly enough but did not stop the Android app from blowing up on search.
I always update without fail, but the devs don’t always push a server update every week, more like once every three or four weeks. They just pushed it to 1.26.2.5797 within the last 24 hours, and I updated all my Plex servers (four of them) just now. But the Android blow-up issue remains.
Hey, devs! It’s pretty tedious to use any of the apps without a search function!
BTW: the Roku channel app still functions, with search.
Just to clarify, you are saying you were having this issue prior to 1.26.2.5797?
I usually update my servers within a few days of release, but did not update to 1.26.2.5797 until yesterday evening. A couple of hours later my wife showed me the search issue on her Pixel 3 XL (A11). Her phone is set to auto-update, so she must have had a fairly new version though she claimed that she “updated the app and the issue still exists.” Which tells me the issue was probably around for at least a few releases.
That being said, we both use the search function on our Pixel’s almost nightly when we put the kids to bed, so the fact that she hadn’t seen it before was strange and makes me believe that it isn’t entirely client based but has something also to do with the server upgrade.
I was running 8.29 on the Android client and was not having the issue when she showed it to me, despite connecting to the same 1.26.2.5797 server. As soon as I upgraded to the latest version it began happening to me. I spent quite some time yesterday trying continuously older versions until I found that 9.0.0.36716 is the latest version that doesn’t experience the problem.
This release is about 6+ weeks old - so I can’t believe that no one else has brought this issue up until yesterday. Based on the above I really think it is a problem with the server upgrade as well - at least some interaction between changes made to the server and the newest clients. They must be getting a malformed/unexpected response from the server and crashing because of it.
But if you are sure the issue existed prior to 1.26.2.5797 that is also interesting. Because in my tests you would have seen this issue on Android with anything past 9.0.0.36716 which means almost 2 months of releases. I’m not surprised it didn’t effect me, since I only update most of my apps every few months, or if I know there is an issue with a version. My wife however, set to auto-update would likely have been on at least a couple of versions past this and didn’t see the issue until the 1.26.2.5797 upgrade.
Another update. This issue is really frustrating because it seems to be intermittent.
I was about to attempt to gather some logs and before I did I noticed that there was another update today to 9.2.3.32818. So I went ahead and upgraded to that from my working 9.0 version.
I attempted to recreate the issue, but was unable to - so I thought maybe the issue was resolved.
I asked to borrow my wife’s phone and confirmed she was still on 9.2.2.32778, which she was unable to use last night because of constant crashes on search. I was unable to recreate the issue again on her phone despite being the same client and server versions that continuously had the problem yesterday.
The only “change” to the environment is that I did stop my Plex server application earlier today and restarted it (I was considering back-revving the server, but decided against it). That, and some possible new media being added are the only variables. This would have been the first restart since the 1.26.2.5797 upgrade (not including whatever restart that the upgrade itself will have to perform). I suppose it is possible that something in the upgrade required a restart to fix, but that would not be standard for Plex upgrades.
I did recall seeing in a changelog somewhere (perhaps in the Server upgrade notes) that one problem fixed somewhere was regarding crashing in certain screens. It would be nice if a Plex employee could chime in to at least notify us that they are aware of some type of issue and have been able to recreate it.
The fact that it is intermittent is no consolation, as I’d rather reliable run older versions then not be able to use it when I need without explanation as to the issue or how to resolve it.
The issue began immediately prior to my updating to version 1.26.2.5797. I was still having it with version (I believe) 1.26.1.5798.
Happily, I am not having it anymore. It stopped yesterday morning. I assume the devs pushed another update to the Android Mobile server, that solved the problem.
