Android 8 can’t play any synced music file and plexamp lags my device, found the same mkv files after syncing a music Playlist
I can’t reproduce the issue, the app downloads mp3 files as expected.
Can anyone that’s able to reproduce the problem help me here?
- Install the app from scratch.
- Download a music album.
- Once the download is complete, verify that the app has downloaded mkv files instead of mp3 ones.
- Share client and sever logs right afterwards. Freel free to email them directly to me at manuel@plexapp.com to speed things up.
(I’ve checked the logs that have already been shared in this thread and couldn’t see anything useful in them, that’s why I’m asking for full ones).
Hi,
I’ve send you an email with screenshot and logfiles.
Interestingly, when adding my playlist to sync, there really is a queue of files on the server to be converted - I just don’t know why.
Another interesting fact: I also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 running LineageOS 16 and Plex 8.4.2.19372 connected to the same server. I took the same album and synced it - Boom, MP3, plays fine. Maybe an issue with recognizing supported file formats on client devices with different Android versions? Resync with my phone keeps getting converted to MKV, sometimes even crashing the Plex client when trying to play the file.
I’m encountering this problem with a Samsung A70. I’ve reinstalled the app, resynced, and emailed you the app and server logs. Hope this helps find a solution!
Exact same issue on a Pixel 3a XL.
With the Update released today the files seem to be no longer converted, but the app still cannot play them.
Can confirm, after last update synced files are still not playing. “An error ocurred while playing this item”.
Same issue here as well. Synced files are not playing. “An error ocurred while playing this item”.
Tested on Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Tab S3. Streaming the same MP3s is working fine.
Based on a suggestion from ManuelPG, I deauthorised my Plex for Windows devices in the Plex web interface, then deauthorised and reauthorised my Plex for Android device. MP3s are now syncing and playing for me…
Success! I deauthorized all devices, except for the plex server itself and the home assistant connector and synced again, now I have my tunes playing again. Thank you.
I had to remove ALL of the android devices, leaving one that wasn’t connected for some months in there didn’t work. Plex for Windows was deauthorized as well.
BUT: After I connected Plex for Windows again and resynced on my phone, the files wouldn’t play. This time, deauthorizing Plex for Windows and syncing one more time was enough.
It works now for me when I cut wifi and data, I can’t play synced music files when I have a connection to the server, I get the message: An error ocurred while playing this item message until I force stop the app.
I’ll send the logs
Today I tried playing my music in the car again - not working.
Cutting all data connections and selecting my playlist from the sync-section works then.
That´s it! I´ve removed my Plex for Windows and Android devices in the Plex WebUI, and reauthorised afterwards. MP3s are now syncing AND playing on my Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab.
Deauthorized everything and did another sync on Android and still getting the message that an error occurred while playing this item.
If I navigate in the Android app to the “Downloads & Sync” menu option, the sync’d music items do play from there. However, they do not play from the library menu item while connected. So while it is connected, I’d have to remember what items were sync’d and which were not to know where to play them from.
With today’s update to Plex for Android to 8.5.1.19778 still not possible to play synced playlist from the playlist section, selecting playlist from sync section is OK.
Just chiming in that I’m experiencing the same issue (synced items will not play directly from the library, but do from the “Downloads & Sync” section).

Also, when playing from the Downloads & Sync area, songs only play one at a time (you can’t play them as a playlist).
Not sure if this is the same issue but I am a new Google Music refugee.
I can sync Music to my phone and it seems to play fine.
However when I am away from network coverage the App will sometimes freeze on the Plex splash screen or it will load but not show any synced music. Occasionally it will work but not very often.
If Plex want to get all the people like myself moving away from Google Music/Youtube Music then they need to get things a bit more stable.
I’ve deauthorized via web the android clients that failed to play synced items, logged in them again and it’s working as expected.
