Plex Android unable to play synced mp3 files

Server Version#: 1.19.5.3035
Player Version#: 8.3.1 (Android)

I tried for both Android and iOS, but could only use file manager on my Android DAP.
Apparently when I sync my mp3 files, whether I set it to Original or 320kbps, Plex somehow converts it into mkv file. Thus, I can’t play the file on neither my android nor iOS devices.

It was working before, because it was downloading mp3 files, but now the iOS player will just stuck, and Android player would either crash, or says that there’s an error.

Using ES File Explorer, I could open the mkv file and play it. But renaming the mkv file to mp3, still won’t let Plex player play it.

It seems like somewhere in the code (or maybe my server settings? I haven’t changed anything), there’s an accidental transcoding to mkv file.

Also, I could play it online version without any issues, it’s just the synced version that’s completely broken.

Still happens on

Plex Server Version : 1.20.0.3125,
Plex Android Version: 8.3.1.19108 (d686ac64)
Plex iOS Version : 7.3

I tried adding Android.xml to the Profiles folder, explicitly specifying that:

<MusicProfile container="mp3" codec="mp3" id="StereoMusicTranscodeProfile" />

But still doesn’t work, issue still persists in Server Version 1.20.0.3133

Having the same issue even on the latest Android beta.
App version: 8.4.0.19321 (31f66898)
Server version: 1.20.0.3133

@redbluescreen Anyway, thank you for the reply, at least we know that it might not be isolated incident.

I’ve tried the sync on iPad, still the same issue.
I’m running my Plex server on Mac Mini 2012, not sure if it matters, but it’s running ffmpeg version 4.3.1.
The thing is that it’s still transcoding even when I set the quality of the mp3s to original.

Hi,
I seem to have the same problem.
Running Plex Android 8.4.1.1931.19323 on Redmi Note 9 Pro, Server 1.19.5.3112 on Windows 2016.

I edited my synced music playlist last wednesday, the additional synced items we’re not playable. I assume that was after an update. Server was restarted, Android App reinstalled. Had the synced playlist deleted, resynced, changed storage to external sdcard, no change.
Trying to play synced files produces “Error playing entry” (roughly translated) popups ad infinitum until I close Plex. Synced file has MKV as format info, although I cant verify the file extension directly. Changing sync quality or numbers of items limit has no effect. Playing any file from server is fine.

I’m also having the same issue. I’ve recently bought a plex pass. This seems to only be an issue with Music files (ex. MP3, FLAC, etc.) For some reason the file also appears as a MKV for some reason. I’m not sure if this is true. Movies seem to work just fine for me.

@schroederx Same here, I reformatted the SD card, create new music library on server to sync it, but still the same.

@Gateway05184 Seems to only happen to music files, movies are fine for me.

Is there anyway to notify the plex devs?

I’ve already left a rating on the Plex App for Android. I also came across this app from plex called PlexAmps on the Play Store. Playing and Downloading Music from there seems to work. The reason why I got the Plex Pass was because Google Play Music was shutting down and migrating to YouTube Music so I bought the plex pass so I can download the music from my server.

Today’s Update didn’t change anything, mp3s are still transcoded on sync, some files even error out. Still not usable, please fix.

PlexAmp, though still not great is certainly a lot better than the Android Plex App! thanks!

I avoided PlexAmp, because I wanted to take my entire music libraries with me, one of the reasons that made me purchase a hifi DAP at the first place.

PlexAmp has cache limitation of 40 songs, and doesn’t show Artist info, so it’s just a mini version, also the iOS / Android versions are from Plex Labs, while Plex player is created by Plex Inc.

Any chance a developer is reading this? I felt really stupid on a test listening last week not being able to play any of my songs…

This is getting a little bit out of hand. Come on Plex get it together. What else are you doing with my subscription money?
What good is a media player if I can’t even sync my content?

As per 6th of August 2020, it still doesn’t work, sync still produces mkv files instead of mp3

Plex Server Version : 1.20.0.3181
Plex Android Version: 8.4.2.19372 (fd5d0b8b)
Plex iOS Version : 7.3.1

I’m having the same problem on my Android device with the full plex app. Plexamp seems to be fine.

Same problem here. Music sync in PLEX for Android is broken. App closes unexpectedly on launch too with synced items…
I hope it will be fixed in v8.5. Sync has been working fine for a while
