Plex App on NEW Apple TV App Store

(Quick update: first submission was rejected, we just submitted again, fingers crossed.)

It looks like a real Apple TV app, because it is one

I am really liking this new (more) open approach! Thanks!

elan does it support 5.1?

+1 I would like to know this too!

Just ordered mine from Apple an hour ago, can’t wait to dig in. Plex is going to be amazing on it I’m sure. Should have it at my door by Nov,2 shipping order says.

For anyone who’s interested, I’ve been developing a native Plex client for the new Apple TV. More about it in this thread:

https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/187382/simplex-a-native-3rd-party-plex-client-for-the-new-apple-tv-4th-gen

(I’m looking for beta testers)

I’ve ordered my new Apple TV today - I’m happy to volunteer to be a beta tester.

The device supports AC3 5.1 passthrough, yeah, and it works with our app

Oh snap. FireTV is going in the trash as soon as they turn on the app store.

Do you guys have any idea when you’ll be able to implement the universal search api? (I know it’s not possible at the moment).

No (for obvious reasons), but something we’re super excited about.

Hi all, elan,

Sorry to reiterate a question here, I just wanted to verify my information is correct. iOS does not have support for HD auto formats (in particular DTS-HD, DolbyTruHD, and DolbyAtmos); however, mpv does. Does the iOS version of Plex support the mpv transcoding feature? That is, Plex Media Player will transcode DTS-HD (not CoreAudio, but true DTS-HD) to LPCM. Does that support exist for the iOS Plex app?

Does the Plex app support LPCM 5.1/7.1?

@Loiosh said:

MPV has nothing at all do with any of our apps, except the new Plex Media Player.

Nope, we use the native player stack on the ATV.

Does the Plex app support LPCM 5.1/7.1?

Not at launch. There were hints the ATV supports that format but our initial testing didn’t confirm.

Apologies if this is revealed elsewhere, but when is Plex going to be available in the TVos/ATV store?

When they’re approved. They already submitted so it’s out of their hands.

It’s in review by Apple as we speak. Of course we have no idea of whether it’ll be approved for launch, you never know about these sorts of things…

I feel your pain! The joy of Apple Review, never know if they’ll just be ok with it, or have problems. Got my fingers crossed it’ll be swift and painless and when my 4th Gen appears next week, Plex will be ready and waiting on the app store to be downloaded

Thanks elan! I guess I got a little confused about the note on the FAQ page for Plex Media Player where it says mpv would allow t he codebase to be shared.

Thank you for the reply! I have been immensely pleased with Plex for years, and totally happy I bought lifetime back when I did. Never had a reason to regret it.

Well, one more rejection, another all-nighter for the team, and another submission. Third time’s the charm?

C’mon Apple seriously! Approve Plex then sit back and watch the Apple TV orders fly in!

Pretty fast turnover in the review process, though - right?

Mostly. It’s taken a couple days for it to get into review, and then another couple days for them to reject

(It’s especially fun when you watch the logs on the test server get hit with requests from the 17. block that Apple is known for…)
