My plex suddenly can’t see my Pc and media on the pc. The only thing I changed was the name of the PC in Windows, could this be the issue?
I can’t remember what the old default Pc mane was so I can’t just change it back to that to check.
Can anyone tell me if this is likely the issue or is renaming the pc irrelevant to this issue?
If renaming is the cause of the problem, can anyone tell me how I re-link the computer to plex, please? Thanks in advance.
What exactly did you rename?
The device name or possibly some Windows account?
Changing the device name should have no impact unless your devices aren’t signed-in and you’ve configured them, manually pointing to the server (which will usually be handled using the server’s local IP but IIRC some clients will also accept a local host name… which might have changed by renaming the device).
Hi, thanks for the reply. I renamed the name of my windows computer in win 10. I just gave the Pc a more personalised appropriate name so I could distinguish it more easily when viewing devices connected to the Wi-Fi. I done this by going to start>settings>system>about>”rename this pc”.
I’m also just thinking now, I just got a new router/modem with my new fibre connection last week and wonder if the new router is more likely an issue? It’s a Vodafone Gigabox. Everything else seems to be working fine, is there anything I should check on the new router?
Verify network is configured as private, not public, in Windows.
Windows 10: Settings → Network & Internet → Properties
If Public, local Plex clients cannot see the server. If they can connect, streaming will be Indirect, not Local.
Thanks for the suggestion, I just checked that setting now and it was set to public, I changed it to private and it made no difference.
My old broadband connection and router is still set up, will be gone at the end of the month; I connected my computer to the old wi-fi router and plex sees my computer again. So it seems to be a issue or setting with the new router and we can rule out the fact I renamed the Pc.
The old router setup had the “public” option selected too and it was working, I changed this to private too and it still worked under that setting too.
Would you know of any settings I can check within the 2 routers that might differ or need altering?
