I have debug logging on but verbose off - is that ok?
that’s precisely how I need it (which happens to be the default settings
)
It tells me enough without mind numbing details about every data packet sent and has the longest data retention.
I am also testing with the USB drive now. I have something strange going on here.
A 6TB NTFS USB drive would not mount correct.
A 4TB NTFS USB drive did. Go figure ?
Were you able to find out anything?
Sorry for not getting back sooner. I got pulled away to do final testing of the Linux portion for PMS 1.18.5
I have learned a few things.
- Shield does not like a 6TB drive, whether formatted as NTFS or EXT4
- Shield does not like EXT4 at all. One would think it does because it’s Linux.
- I let it run for hours playing movies without a hiccup.
- The USB 4TB drive is still visible and working just fine.
Plex has no problem seeing or accessing the drive. It’s listed in the Shield by its label. Everything is solid.
I had a similar issue again today when switching over to a new network drive for use on my plex server. Basically, after plugging in the new drive the option to select storage location was just gone from the plex settings, so there was no way to tell the server where to look and things were stuck broken. I ended up having to completely re-setup the server, and at one point also did the procedure mentioned above to get the setting back. Logs are attached.
I guess bottom line is it definitely isn’t an issue with the drive, seems to be that certain actions cause the storage location setting option to just disappear…?
I didn’t need to setup the server again.
I think what we’re seeing is an issue with the Shield OS itself.
I will ask the devs about it.
Ok - let me know what you find out. Hopefully the logs shed some light on what broke
Hey Chuck,
Could you take a look at the logs I posted on another thread (copied below) to see what the deal is? Wondering if the issues are related but haven’t had anyone from support reply. Thank you.
Matt
FYI - same issue happened again tonight. Saw there was an update to the plex app on the Shield. Installed it and it broke the ability to connect to live TV (didn’t show up as an option to even select, but it was present on the web) Restarted the shield and the live TV was back but now the storage setting has disappeared again. The only way to get the setting back is to shut the server down, eject the drive, physically unplug the drive, restart the shield, plug the drive back in, then restart their server.
Why does this happen every time there is an application update? It is very frustrating.
Pull the logs please (debug logs) ZIP after you restart the Shield.
Maybe we can catch what is happening.
I appreciate the continued support - logs attached. I first just ejected the drive and did a restart of the shield but that didn’t make the setting come back (though that seemed to make Live TV selectable again - it had disappeared after the app update as mentioned above), I had to actually unplug it and plug it back in after the shield restarted to get things back. Also, all of my Apple TV devices lost the server connection after the reboots and server off / on cycles and had to be restarted themselves to start working again with Plex. Web seemed to work right away. Really hope you can catch what is happening since every time there is an app or server update the whole setup seems to break pretty badly. Is there a particular order of operations you are supposed to do before installing any updates?
Attached some verbose logs around a restart event from this afternoon. For some reason I read debug as verbose :). With the restart the server was stopped once I opened up Plex again (is this normal behavior for it to not auto-start post a reboot?) but the storage location setting was still there. It seems like it only disappears after doing either a server or application update. Hopefully the other logs I posted can show events around the time the update was done (approximately 11:30PM CST).
In these logs, I see where PMS does indeed see the external drive just as it should.
I am using the same version as you. I am using a Shield 2019 Pro.

Now that you know how VERBOSE works, would you turn it off again please?
Yes I turned it back off. Is that behavior of the server not starting back up normal?
Back to the storage location issue - I did notice that I could still actually access the storage drive from Plex, but the setting on where to keep the storage location is just gone from the application. So it’s like it still was “working” but there was no ability to modify or change the location. Only following that very specific sequence mentioned above seems to get the setting back. What could cause that issue? Bug in the application / server? Again it seems to occur during updates.
There was a report not long ago of the locations being removed when Editing a library section’s folder list.
In mine, it’s still available. The list does take a moment to populate (couple seconds)
Perhaps I should have been clearer - where the setting goes away is on the Plex app on the shield (the setting right next to whether or not to have the server on). That’s where you select internal or external storage for the server and that setting just disappears after applying an update every time. Even though the setting is gone, Plex still seems to work and paths correctly to my storage drive for DVRs, etc but I have no way to change the setting on the shield app. Does that make sense?
I’m still learning the shield. I apologize for being slow.
Can you take a pic of what I should be looking at? (helps educate this dummy
)
This is the setting that disappears - plex storage location. Also, live TV seems to break on the Shield app post upgrade (doesn’t show up as a selectable item) image|640x480
Thanks for that. The devs took a look.
- It should long ago be fixed.
- They would like the app logs
if they are enabled its like on the android moble app IP:32500/logging
and it should still include some “back logging” too
hopefully catches what we need
I just downloaded them now from the shield plex app - when connecting it only send me to a text field on the website (no bundle to download, etc like the apple tv apps do).
Sadly it looks like they may be slightly after the upgrade based on the timestamp, not sure. Probably would still capture the live TV missing bug though. How do I get access to the back logging from the 32500/logging site?
