[NVIDIA SHIELD] Installed 1.18.1.2019 and now my server won't start [RESOLVED]

Server Version#: 1.18.1.2019
Player Version#: 7.24 Beta

I just installed this version and rebooted the shield and then noticed I can’t get to my server. When I tried the very latest beta client, it would just crash on me. I went back to 7.23 of the client and could get in, but the name was different and it said my server wasn’t started. When I click on start, it would try to start but then would never show it was started.

Anyone else having this issue?

Yep same issue, and can’t access the shield network shared folders either. Any way to downgrade? When I try using adb -r -d it wont allow it since the PMS apk isnt a debug version, even tho its a plex beta.

This update has just been pushed to my Nvidia Shield too and now Plex won’t even load at all on the Shield.
You load it and it instantly closes again.

Completely broke the whole setup.
Hope this is fixed very quickly

Server crashes. Plex App (most of the time) stuck at Splashscreen. If I manage to get into the plex App, option to start / stop the server is missing.

Same here, just watched a serie, updated afterwards and now the server isn’t starting. Removing the updates doesn’t work sadly. Please help

I’ve PM’d the guy who updates the release notification list.
This isn’t even a beta release - it’s a full public release so is going to cause serious issues for everyone once systems start updating to this version.

I’ve suggested they pull the update whilst the look into it.

I currently can’t use Plex at all.
Server no longer loads so isn’t accessible on any device.
Plex doesn’t load at all on the Nvidia Shield, so can’t even play locally.

Clearing up data for both PMS and player on Shield 2019 Pro did not help. Nor restarting a couple of times, in between force closing, clearing data and reinstalling this latest update from Play Store.

I’ve uninstalled 1.18.1.2019, installed 1.18.1.1973 from APK Mirror and, after setting up the server from scratch, it works again. Not attempting an update anytime soon.

Rollback instructions, at least on Shield:

THIS WILL RESET YOUR LIBRARY, WAIT FOR AN OFFICIAL UPDATE INSTEAD

  1. Settings -> Apps -> All apps -> PMS -> Force quit + uninstall (cannot downgrade via ADB)
  2. Download version “1.18.1.1973 (smb)” from APK mirror
  3. Install via ADB, e.g.:

adb install ~/Downloads/com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb_1.18.1.1973_(smb)-1116749370_minAPI23(arm64-v8a)(nodpi)_apkmirror.com.apk

  1. Restart shield for a good measure.
  2. Open Plex, go through the setup.
  3. “Plex Media Server is starting for the first time, please wait…”
  4. Success, setup complete.
  5. Cry a little, set things up from scratch, never update without checking Shield and Plex forums again.

I am dead in the water…I guess I will wait for a hotfix. Good thing I have an additional plex server running on my Synology for cases such as this…

I really haven’t got time to set it up again, it took me best part of a day last time… the devs must have an apk that can be sideloaded…

Can plex add the option to downgrade apk files? Windows and linux have no issues downgrading when there is a bad plex release but the android version doesn’t allow it.

adb install -r -d “com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb_1.18.1.1973_(smb)-1116749370_minAPI23(arm64-v8a)(nodpi).apk”
Performing Streamed Install
adb: failed to install com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb_1.18.1.1973_(smb)-1116749370_minAPI23(arm64-v8a)(nodpi).apk: Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_VERSION_DOWNGRADE]

Can plex add the option to downgrade apk files?

That’s not up to Plex devs I’m afraid, that’s how ADB works. What I am not 100% certain is that maybe you can downgrade through APK installer UI, as in try to click on the APK file via some file explorer (like Solid Explorer) and trigger the installation UI on the screen. Never tried. Please report back!

Plex are currently investigating the issue.
They’ve pulled the update in the meantime - but it’s already installed on a lot of devices.

It is totally up to the plex devs. They release beta software but don’t allow the debug switch in ADB. Using the adb switches -r and-d will allow you to replace and downgrade an already installed app.

Thank heavens for the beta testers, making sure the bugs are squashed, and the kinks worked out, before the rest of us push that download button.

TIL that you can downgrade with ADB!

Although, by reading the above commit, it might not be possible to upload debug APKs to Play Console. Unless by using alpha/beta channels, but I’ve never tried anything than jarsigned release APKs on my apps, not even on beta channels. Thanks tho!

Good part of a day… your lucky… took me like 3 weeks… working on my database like 3 hours a day. I wrote up a backup process here in the forums and it did work on my 16GB test shield… Guess we will wait an see.
