The latest version available for download (1.16.0.1364-da192ff7) works brilliantly on my desktop with a dedicated nvidia gpu and no integrated graphics. However, on my laptop, it is unusable (dell xps 15 7590, i9 9980HK, intel uhd 630, nvidia gtx1650).
Now the problem with most modern laptops is that (even if you change the settings in the nvidia control panel) it will still prefer the integrated gpu. Still, the laptop can easily play 50Gb 4k films in vlc as well as in the windows store version of netflix (only way to get 4k netflix in windows btw).
For anyone else that is having issues, the best workaround so far is using the PlexMediaPlayer app (2.58.0.1076-38e019da at the time of writing).
Once installed:
- switch to TV mode (top right corner)
- click Profile -> Settings
- (using keyboard arrows) Main -> scroll down -> tick OpenGL native
- restart app
- use either desktop mode or tv mode, both work well
