Server Version#: 1.24.1.4931
Player Version#: 1.34.1.2590-74ea7099
after the update the program is stuttering like crazy all over the place 55e86f78-2545-43dc-a168-c08753d8d08a.avi this is the especially most noticeable, while the browser version at app.plex.tv runs just fine and smoothly
I am having the same issue. The entire background color of the UI changed and now simple tasks such as clicking the edit icon takes 8-12 seconds for it to even pop up and another 5-7 seconds for it to go away after clicking Save Changes.
I have the same problem, my cpu jumps up to 50% , the worst is when I try to change a poster I cant scroll…
The whole thing started after the update.
I have a Ryzen 5950x this shouldn’t even put a dent in my cpu ussage…
Just came in to check whether I was alone in this. The app is WAY less responsive than it used to be. Feels like the app is running at 5 frames a second, with how often the UI updates when scrolling. Task manager shows it using up to 50% of my CPU just scrolling up and down the home page.
Also, why are there 2 C++ Application Development Framework tasks under Plex too? Do you have to be running 3 apps at once for sitting at the home page? Those 2 tasks show up as QTWebEngineProcess.exe.
I’d just like to throw in there that i have the same server version and player version and am facing the exact same issue. After the update everything has become super laggy.
I’ve actually had an additional problem. A lot of TV show posters disappeared for me too! I had to click on “Update Matching” and now it is refreshing the MetaData for 1000+ shows which is taking forever.
Even weirder: Some posters show up on the Chrome interface but not on the windows player.
Another discovery: Plex has… forgotten? what shows I have already seen. e.g. I’ve seen all of the Big Bang Theory. Plex is now saying I haven’t seen the last 3 seasons and putting the episodes in my continue watching list.
Looks like the whole thing has been complied to use software rendering only. Hope this can be fixed soon and not be a case of having to do a total re-write.
I really, really hope this is genuine, but to everyone here - I hate to break it to you but this slow ui experience has simply been the reality of plex for desktop ever since the new app launched.
I believe this thread is one of the first to discuss the issue (back when downloads were completely broken as well - thankfully that part got fixed)
Amidst all the new features, other bug fixes and improvements, this slow/unresponsive UI performance has never been addressed and has persisted over the years.
Many have likely not noticed it much up until now as the slowdown has only been more severe on higher resolution displays and these are not as common. As a user with a 4K monitor I just had to accept that the UX will always be garbage while trying to navigate the library or edit items.
There is also a MUCH more irritating issue while trying to watch content, where the top and bottom bars with playback controls get “stuck” on the screen and become unresponsive while the video keeps playing. I have found this most commonly occurs when switching from windowed to full screen after just starting playback.
While the UI is “hung”, you can’t do anything to control playback, so if you try to pause or rewind those commands will buffer until the ui decides it’s time to un-stick. This can take anywhere from a few seconds to upwards of ten.
This brings us to today, where this new ui update has taken things to a whole new level, exacerbating the problem to the point where it is becoming apparent to users with more mainstream display resolutions. The lag is now noticeable even on my old 1280x1024 secondary monitor.
And mind you, that thread I linked is mostly users on laptops with integrated graphics, I primarily use a desktop with a 9700k and 2080ti - if I’m having a hard time then I shudder to imagine the experience of this new update on a mobile device.
And I will do everything in my power to make sure that STAYS in my imagination - as I happen to have a surface go tablet (crappy Pentium dual core, but a real nice high resolution 1800 x 1200 display) that already is unusably bad when it comes to this lag issue. I am 100% certain it would be crippled by this update so I will be doing everything in my power to ensure it doesn’t update until this issue is addressed.
TLDR: The plex app ui has always been laggy, but this was mostly only apparent on high res displays and low end hardware (not an excuse). This issue has now been made SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE by the most recent ui update, and is apparent on all screen resolutions.
The underlying issue has never been addressed since the app launched, and has to do with the engine that runs the ui not using hardware aceleration (or doing so very poorly/being generally unoptimized) disclaimer: I don’t know for sure, but this is what I gathered from online.
This issue will never be truly fixed unless the Plex team puts in the time to properly fix the issue - and I really hope they do.
Apologies if this was too much of a rant - but I’ve been living with this UX for two years, hoping for a fix in every update. I got the new UI redesign today, thinking to myself “Hey maybe with this they finally fixed the lag as well” only to realize it was made EVEN worse.
Yep, since the background changed to blue the UI is horribly slow, even worse than it was before.
Also, now when you hit the back button, no matter where you are it sends you to your plex home rather than the last screen you were looking at… gonna post a question about this.
Hey. I have a pretty decent machine with a dedicated GPU. I didn’t experience this issue even with my 4k monitors until today. The plex windows app updated itself too, I didnt want it to.
its really made the app unusable now. I might try to roll back. The web app makes transcoding a must which is off on my server so thats not really an option.
@ffhhkk@camjo99 They did get around the previous lag by using hardware rendering, but in this new release it uses software rendering again, which has led to it being very laggy and non responsive at times.
The main problem seems to be that they are trying to emulate a web browser rather than having a native app.
@ffhhkk There is two approaches to this, the first being if they can temporally fix it so that it can use hardware rendering again, but it will feel a little laggy, just not as bad at it is now. The second would be for them to start again with a totally new native app, but would take a long while to develop and may mean they would also need to change the way the web backend works as well.
They are making a new HTPC app, but that also has the same issue as it relies on web emulation, but it maybe that’s the way they will take it as it would be less work for them to maintain only one app rather than two apps.
I’m afraid without the original source code, no you can’t
