I got that message because I hadn’t configured a Windows Firewall rule/exception. I was trying to play on another computer on my network and when I checked the server there was a Windows Firewall window I hadn’t checked and OK’ed. Make sure there’s no firewall or any software preventing the game transcoder from connecting.
I approved it on the firewall pop up and went into the firewall thing and made sure both boxes were checked, but I’m still receiving that error.
E: I made inbound and outbound rules allowing access to the transcoder and still nothing.
Oh, this just gets better & better…
For the time being I’ve put using MAME ROMs on the back burner, so I tried to get Plex to read an NES ROM I have. First I tried just simply adding the folder I keep my NES ROMs in & scanned the library. Nothing. Then I followed the instructions on the support page for adding game cores. For now I’m using nestopia_libretro.dll & put it in the Game Cores local app data folder as shown:
I then added the entry to the Retro Cores XML file as such:

That’s exactly how I have it typed in when editing it as text because that’s what it looks like on the support article.
So I scan the library once again. Nada. I even tried modifying the folder name scanned for the library. Zilch.
Am I not using the right core? Is the XML entry not correct?
For the platform, use exactly what appears on the Platforms tab in your library. In this case, it should be “Nintendo Entertainment System” instead of “NES.”

So are you saying the platform name has to be the full verbiage for it to show up? I had no idea as I didn’t see any reference on the support page or anywhere else mentioning that. I’ll go ahead & edit my XML file when I get a chance to see if that works.
I may have misunderstood your issue (or more specifically, I was pointing out a second problem).
If your games aren’t being recognized at all, ensure you’re following the naming guidance provided by Plex:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-game-files-and-cores/
In the example provided in that document, the “/Games” folder is what is added to the library. So you might have something like:
/Games. <--- Add this folder to your library
/Nintendo Entertainment System
/Castlevania (1987). <--- A separate directory for each game is recommended, but not required
/Castlevania (1987).nes
Best core for NES? tried nestopia and not getting anything but errors.
what is a good nes core?
You are missing a quotation mark before "snes
Keep in mind that this release is a Plex Lab project so things are still experimental. We hope that there is enough interest in this to keep the project alive and become a fully supported Plex product.
The platform name is part of the game so your mapping has to use the same name to find the correct core.
For users having issues with cores or the mapping file, there is already a 3rd party tool that will help. Core Manager for Plex Arcade
you keep mentioning core manager but this link takes you another forum post and that forum post take you to an article that doesnt have the link for the 3rd party tool unless you are talking about RetroArch and if so you should just call it RetroArch
Sorry. Fixed. I accidentally pointed to the last comment, which was mine. I meant to point to the first post which is about the app. My comment was to another user answering a question.
ok cool because i saw you mention that somewhere else in another thread and thought I was going blind because i couldnt find the DL link
I’m going to assume they are licensing the backend from Parsec so there is a real cost to that and then there are the licensing fees for Atari. I’m sure they would not have charged for this on top of Plex Pass unless they were incurring charges themselves.
So after using the core manager linked in this thread to re-download the core(s) I want (first deleting the ones already detected for safe measure), I decided to try to name/organize my ROM file as you noted, the only difference being I don’t have my ROM in the “Games” folder per se as my Plex server is installed on the SSD my OS is also installed on that has very limited space, while I have a separate HDD for storing files. I have the directory set like so:
And the file is sitting in its own folder as such:
So I do another scan on my server. Guess what? Still nothing.
I wouldn’t think the ROMs have to be in the Plex games folder since before this whole rigmarole my MAME ROMs were detected when I pointed to the ROMs folder, and as you might see in the screenshot above my MAME installation one exception where I have it installed on the storage drive given how everything has to be under the main directory for it to work.
If the console ROMs have to be in actual Plex Games folder, then I guess my next step would have to be uninstalling my Plex Server & then reinstalling it on my storage drive à la my MAME installation?
Only thing I’ve managed to do so far tonight is crash PLEX about 3 times. Keep getting the “Network configuration prevents direct connection to game session” error. Tried running a few of my NES ROMS but Plex would go unresponsive had to reboot to fix.
Big fail thus far, sadly. 7 day free trial … is that because it will take that long to get it working?
i got everything setup anyone having a issue linking parsec accouint???
You’re wrong, the link says it works for GNC 4 and the RX 580 is a GNC 4. I have the same problem. I hope PLEX has a solution to that. I’ve already asked Parsec for support and they asked to contact PLEX
I’m getting this also on the newest PMS update, Win10 PC. From the couple times I did it it appears to be at least the Mupen64Plus and parallel_n64_libretro (the N64 cores) that initiated the FUBARedness, though I’m not sold that it’s limited to them. Also, not only does it make it so none of the other games start, but it messes up all of Plex to where my server is no longer accessible from any device, including the PC on which it’s running. Happened 3 times before I canceled my free trial and deleted my Games library. The arcade looks awesome, but it isn’t worth breaking all of Plex for.
You know what? I figured it out. It’s the friggin Nestopia core. Tried a different core and it works.
