Plex Artifacting

Server Version#: Version 3.108.2
Player Version#: 1.3.1.916-1cb2c34d

I have Plex server running on a dedicated windows box. I’ve noticed video artifacting/choppy playback to multiple clients while the server is direct streaming. I’ve noticed this with both the windows app and the Android TV app. Here’s what it looks like

I don’t notice this issue while transcodeing and I’ve seen it happen with 4k and 1080p content. The files play fine with mpv, vlc and kodi.

Sounds more like a plex client issue than a plex media server issue. have you tried the plex media player? I expect it would perform similarly to mpv.

I’m seeing this on both the AndroidTV app and the Plex App for windows (called Plex for Windows on the download page). Since it’s happening across platforms I was thinking it was a server issue.

I’m also seeing this with the plex plugin for Kodi. But the file plays fine if i play it through Kodi with out using the plex plugin. So it’s only happening when the file is being served from the plex server, or so it would seam.

I do follow the logic and normally I would agree that the server is what is common in both problem cases and thus it would appear to be the issue. My comment was based on this thinking.

Direct play (top to bottom) would seem to indicate a problem on the client as that’s where the media is decoded. Transcoding fixing had me thinking that the server can decode it directly, and then encode it into a format that your client can work with.
Plex has been working with unifying it’s plient over multiple platforms, so that didn’t seem to be to be a critical difference.
I don’t know anything about Kodi.
I would try the plex media player, it has mpv at its core.
Till someone can help analyse the logs, thats my guess

Just tossing out an random idea here, but I’ve seen this kind of thing when there is some kind of network/ethernet issue, and the artifacting happens when some packets didn’t make it. If you have a different switch, perhaps try swapping it out temporarily to see if it matters?

There are also a number of tweaks you can make to your ethernet adapter driver in Windows, but unfortunately I can’t seem to find that forum post right now.

This may have been the issue. I changed the switch and it looks like the issue went away. I’m still doing some testing.
