Plex assigning the wrong artist

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3795
Player Version#:

I’ve just started using Plex with a large music library and initially assumed it would not insert incorrect information so haven’t had a chance to check through everything yet but have found it has assigned the wrong artist to at least one album.

The album is by “Paul Brookes” but Plex displays “Paul Janes”. The name in the directory structure of the media is correct and the metadata of all the files is correct so I don’t know where it is getting the information. I have tried to edit the album details in Plex but all that happens when I save the changes is that it breaks the sorting (I sort by family name, editing it make it change to sorting by “P”) and the name remains unchanged.

How can I fix this so the correct name is displayed?

Edit: still on the b’s but I’ve now come across an album where the album name has been changed. The album name displayed does not exist (or at least is not a name listed in the band’s discography). The wrong artist name above is also non-existent (or at least a search of the internet for guitarists of that name has no results).

There could be bad metadata embedded tags.

Change the second drop down to Artist

I would do a fix match first and select the right person. ( click “search options” in window to manually search)

If the correct one isn’t found, manually edit the Artist not the Album. It will propagate to the albums.

There is an “Artist” field which is actually displayed and “Sort Artist” field so for this one “Johnny Cash” shows up in the Cs instead of the J’s because that is what the sort artist starts with. You can put whatever you want in them.

Thank you @BigWheel

Yes, that is what I thought might be wrong at first but I checked every file (using both iTunes and a third party command line tool) and the metadata is all correct. The name “Janes” doesn’t appear anywhere.

The fix match tool did not work. At first searching manually for “Paul Bankes” returned “Paul Janes” as a 100% match. There must be a problem with the logic in the search. Searching just for “Bankes” returned nothing.

I have now successfully changed the name manually. The entry in the sort field was already correct and entering the details in the artist rather than the album did not affect it so it continued to sort under “b”.

The only thing I have not managed to do is remove the photo. I can’t find a reasonable photo to use (he’s only a minor player) and haven’t found how to remove the incorrect one without a replacement. Is there a way to do that? Or do I have to use another image such as the album cover?

Oh yeah you would need to find a replacement for the photo.

Thanks.

I’ve managed to find a photo.
