Plex relentlessly changing album artist to incorrect match

Hi all,

I just now upgraded to Plex Pass, and so I’m not sure if the following issue is a result of the premium music matching or if I just hadn’t noticed it until now.

I have an album by an artist called “Cass.”, and for some reason Plex is hellbent on changing it to “Crass”, who is (I assume) an artist it has matched from it’s sources.

The thing is, if I edit the album information to change it, while Plex is refreshing it changes it straight back. I’ve tried updating the whole library, and editing the info several times and everything just results in it turning back to the wrong artist.

Does anyone have any ideas about this? I’m really protective over my music library and it’s one of the big reasons I upgraded to Plex Pass, so this is a bit of a bummer.

Thanks!

When you created the library, did you tell PMS to use the metadata which is in the file? If the tags in the file are ambiguous or conflicting, anything can happen.

Also, please check the name per MusicBrainz or similar reputable source. PMS uses Last.FM as the default.

Just a guess but when you say you updated your album info do you mean plex’s album info or from your PC.
witch OS btw?

From windows right click on a media file chose properties then click on the details tab.
That’s the info that plex will use to get album info. Make sure that info is correct. Especially any typos in the name and year.

If all that is correct the problem is on Plex’s side or where ever the metadata is pulled from.

Mater of fact I vaguely remember Metadata scrapers during setup. “Who would you like to use for metadata”. I could not find an option to change that option in PMS. Hopefully somebody with more knowledge than me will come along so you can try that option.

Hey, thanks both for the replies! The metadata in the file is fine. I think what has happened here is it has tried to match the artist to the closest match from it’s sources on initial setup, and then something interesting happens that led me to the solution…

If you browse Plex by artist, you can edit the information of artists as a stand-alone entity. All albums tied to that artist will then use the artist poster and banner you chose in that artist edit box. If you go back to browsing by album and edit the album info, if you enter an artist that it doesn’t recognize, it’ll change back to the closest it recognizes from your list of artists.

For this reason, if an artist entry is incorrect, you cannot fix it on an album-by-album basis by editing album info.

So the solution was this:

  • Browse by artist
  • Find the incorrect artist entry
  • Edit the artist entry from there
  • Correct all the information manually (similar artist fixing was a pain)
  • Make sure the album info now features the fixed artist profile
