Plex buffering issue (4K high bitrates), but not on all devices

Hi !

I have a very annoying problem, when I try to stream a movie with a very high bitrate (4K HDR @70, 80 Mbps for example), my Plex Media Player keeps buffering… then play a few seconds, then buffer again, etc.

The thing is, I don’t have that problem with my phone or my laptop.
The problem is unlikely coming from the plex server (remote server), which is a very good dedicated server with a gigabit connection (up and down), but you understood, since it already works on other devices.

As for my computer, it also has a gigabit connection in ethernet and the problem cannot be due to a hardware limitation (i9-9900k OC, RTX 2070 super OC, 1 to SSD NVMe, 32 GB DDR4, etc.), I am running Windows 10 pro 64 bits with the latest version (20H2), all my drivers are up to date and I use both current Plex clients (Media Player and Plex for Windows).

A friend has the same problem with his computer, but IDEM, it works on his phone and his laptop.

We really cannot understand the source of the problem, we may have ideas, but we cannot find a solution and we have not been able to identify the real source of the problem.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your time

Server Version#: 1.21.0.3711 (linux x64)
Player Version#: Plex for Windows 1.25.0.1511-47afccd4 and Plex Media Player2.58.0.1076-38e019da

Having the same problem.

I’m having this same issue. High bitrate 4K SDR & HDR content is buffering/stuttering on my gigabit hardlined Xbox Series X and on the LG TV Plex app.

Content is Direct Play or Direct Stream.

Sometimes it crashes the app or refuses to resume at all after pause.

On my iPhone, everything plays flawlessly with no buffering over WiFi.

Nobody has a solution to this issue ? It’s quiet a nightmare.

Having the exact same issue as well - LG webOS has buffering-issues - thought it was my new server setup, as it worked on a local server before, but network traffic is not the limiting factor - any advice, how I could search for errors ?

I only have a suspicion:

You mega file is transcoded by the server when streamed to phone and your laptop. However, when it is streamed to your desktop machine it is attempted without transcoding which fails because of the defacto bandwidth which happens to be too small.

btw, imho opinion streaming a 80 Mb/s file over the internet is a silly idea.

I’m still having this issue but it’s on the local network, Direct Play and Direct Stream. iOS works perfect and plays almost instantly, but webOS, Xbox Series X, and even the Shield TV I picked up to see if that was better had and continues to exhibit this problem.

Tried to watch Lord of the Rings @ 80mbps last night on the hardwired Series X and it failed after 2 minutes. The LG webOS app on the CX played it over wireless without issue for 20 minutes before the buffering started. Restarting the TV would sometimes fix the issue but that’s not a realistic option.

Really disappointing to have paid for a lifetime pass when their apps have issues on all platforms, especially Xbox.

Nope.

FWIW, LG doesn’t claim support for bitrates over 50Mbps.

My solution. This issue never happened before; however, I was having the same problem on my Roku and a new Android TV streaming device on my LAN. I did all sorts of troubleshooting like everyone else. I thought by purchasing the newer Android TV device for $59 with a faster processor and ethernet connection than my Roku would solve the issue - it didn’t. I also use Ethernet over Power / PowerLan devices instead of a home run ethernet cable. My solution was to Force Direct Play on the main Plex menu of the clien t. Go to Settings/Video/Direct Play -> force. Now everything works like it used to - actually even better. The videos don’t transcode, and I don’t have to go into the settings of each of the videos each time I go to play. Also, invest in new High-Speed HDMI cables - if you have a new 4K TV and have old HDMI cables, you are missing out.

I had the same problem across all of my devices (Roku, NVidia Shield, LG OLED TV); however, I just purchased a 2019 NVidia Shield Pro, and this seems to have fixed the problem. My old Shield would buffer and stutter on the 4K version of Gemini Man, but the 2019 Shield has no problems.
