Plex can see the media, but cannot stream it

This all started with Windows 11 update 24H2. Since then, I’m multiple NAS OS reinstalls, I’m on a clean install of Windows 11, and countless articles read, and settings attempted to adjust, and I just can’t figure this out.

The setup is this:

PMS lives on a desktop running Windows 11. It uses a 2.5Gb LOM for internet connection (1Gbs fiber) connected to an Ubiquiti Switch and then up to the router. It has a DP 10Gb NIC that connects only to the NAS network. The video files live on the NAS and are represented as mapped drives to the desktop. This NAS network does not have an external internet connection. This NAS network consists of 2 Synology NAS (DS2419+, DS3622xs+), the desktop, and a TP-Link unmanaged 10Gb switch. This setup ran flawlessly for almost 2 years until that Windows 11 update.

As it stands now, PMS can see, inventory, and do all the normal tasks with the files on both NAS. But it can only stream the media on the DS2419+. It doesn’t matter if I try to play it locally through the web link or app. To confirm it wasn’t a Plex app issue on one of my devices, I even tried the external IP address for the Plex from the browser on the PMS itself, with no success. From the desktop, I can go to the mapped drive, open the folders, and watch the files directly using Windows Media Player or VLC, but no joy through Plex.

So far I’ve:

  • I’ve reinstalled Windows.
  • I’ve reinstalled the DSM version on the NAS 3 times.
  • I’ve installed Plex fresh, and let it rebuild the Libraries vs a migration.
  • I’ve given the User Account on the desktop access and admin privileges to the NAS with the issue. No change.
  • I’ve gone line by line, setting by setting on the NAS that works and tried to duplicate those settings on the one that doesn’t. No change

I’m sure it’s a setting or permission issue between PMS and the NAS but I cannot figure out what the issue is.

Firewall setting on the DS3622 ??

Good thought, but it’s not turned on. I’ve also checked the firewall on the desktop, and everything with “plex” in the name is allowed through both public and private networks.

Did you ever figure this issue out ??
