Plex Cannot update - Windows 10

I’m having trouble here since the release of the new Android app which requires minimum server version 1.41.2

I noticed an error on the app to say the new Android app was not compatible with my server version (Win 10), I thought I had been updating regularly (manually) but it appears I’ve been stuck for a while on 1.40.3.8555.

Plex says there is an update available to 1.41.6.9685, clicking server update starts the update process but results in a spinning circle and no libraries are loaded and the version doesn’t update.

Also just to note, on the server web browser, ‘Watchlist’ and ‘Discover’ both show a warning triangle and if I click them it says unexpected error.

I thought I was on 64bit and I am but there is a folder in the x86 folder too, checking via Task Manager I can see that I have a 64bit version running when plex is open but I can also see in ‘Add Remove Programs’ that there are two installations, one from March 2023 called ‘Plex Media Server’ 1.20.1.3252 and one from June 2024 which is Plex Media Server 1.40.3.8555 (64 bit).

If I try to uninstall the Version 1.2.1.3252 App it says:

Windows cannot find 'C:\ProgramData\Package Cache(b5de1a1d-c377-415c-8d61-6513b39c0b0a)\pms.exe

So I have not uninstalled anything yet but I have also tried to install some of the other versions that had appeared in my Plex Updates folder (presumably left there from each time I had tried to update it)

Trying any of these throws an error saying ‘The 32bit version of Plex Media Server was detected’ and that it would be uninstalled in the next step.

On the next step It gives an error stating ‘Error code 2, the system could not find the file specified’. Setup cannot continue and that I should try to uninstall manually

I also tried the Fixit tool to check install issues which couldn’t find the problem (but did not use it to try and uninstall), I have not checked Registry yet.

Frustrating as everything was working find in terms of streaming until the new Android App!

Windows: Errors trying to upgrade, install, or uninstall Plex Media Server

  1. Try using the Microsoft Fix It Tool to uninstall existing versions of Plex Media Server.

  2. Uninstall any remaining copies of Plex Media Server. Use the standard Windows uninstall. Do not use Revo, CCleaner, etc. Do not delete/modify the Windows registry settings for Plex Media Server. Do not delete/modify the Plex Data Folder.

  3. Reboot.

  4. Download and install the current public version of Plex Media Server from plex.tv.

Thanks, I will backup and give this a try

Thanks and resolved, the Fixit tool wasn’t working for the x86 version but I was able to uninstall using an archived installer file with the same version.

Reinstalled latest version and all working well

Thanks!
