Plex Client for Playstation 3 or 4?

Sony does not have an App Store on their consoles, and neither does Microsoft. So the answer is no I am afraid. :(

http://us.playstation.com/develop/

Unfortunately those companies listed has done big deals with Sony (and the other way around) to get the apps up there. One can't simply create an app and get it released on PSN. Not yet at least.

But, of course, if someone high-up in the food chain at Sony all of the sudden realised that Plex is the coolest thing since sliced bread then we would be allowed onto PSN. Something tells me the odds are quite high for this to happen :(

  • No set-up fees to get licensed as an e-Publisher on PSN
  • Receive ESRB ratings FREE for all your digital titles
  • Streamlined submission process
  • DevKit Loaner Program (subject to availability and other restrictions)  <<<< I thought this looked kinda snazzy!
  • Market your game to millions of PlayStation® fans through the PlayStation®Blog

I would think this will apply to apps as well as games. Sony is making a huge push to bring people to their eco system and away from Microsoft. The only obstacle you may face is that sony is making a push on the music and media unlimited service they offer. So they may view Plex as competition. These are questions the company will have to find out by applying for the dev kit http://us.playstation.com/develop/ and seeing if they can work something out. If you charge for the app and it is around $5 I'm sure people will pay for it and you can invite new customers to the table by offering it for free to Playstation + members for a limited tme.

Yeah it looks like indie game development will get much easier than before.
Lets hope they specify it like this for app development soon. The only reason why I sound negative is because if they really meant it to be this easy for app development... they would have written the word "app" there as well.

Anyway, I know I might be wrong about this. I am just guessing here.

Most things the Swedish ninja guy has said are just guesses.

I'm not sure what it’s like for other territories, but the European PSN developers pages clearly indicate it isn’t just for games, and gives you options to develop music, media and video content.

I love plex, but they need to make these apps happen in my opinion, as they seem to now be concentrating on tablet and phones.  If it gets to the point where you need a Roku box for every TV rather than native apps for the smart TVs, ps3’s and blu ray players we already have, then we might as well use XBMC on a Ras pi, save the need for a server than transcodes, and all use cheap nas boxes...

Yeah, that is why I wrote "I am just guessing here" in my post...

Yea It looks like PS4 development wont be limited to games.

Unless you're watching nothing but home movies and TV shows. Having Plex on the Playstation platform is counter productive due to Cinavia.

I fail to see what Cinavia has to do with a native Plex client on PS4 streaming from a local Plex Server?

I have both a PS3 and now a PS4. I don't need a client for PS3, the UPnP works perfectly fine for me.  But as the PS4 lacks ANY native ability to play local content (no UPnP/DLNA, can't even plug in a USB hard drive full of content like you can on PS3, etc.), and there has been zero indication from Sony that there every WILL be (ok, they DID say at some point it will play music CD's), it would sure be nice if Plex would could a client app and release it on PSN.  Charge $5 like is done now for the Android client.

You fail to see how having random movies muted some 20 minutes in is negative? I agree with the Smurf. A PS4 client will never be perfect due to Cinavia. I would still like a client though.

yes there are a few ways to do this.  I used to run ssh on my Linksys router via dd-wrt firmware.  Then set it up to run on 443 .. (most firewalls corp and otherwise don't look at 443.)  Have the host on the other side of the ssh tunnel run a proxy server have it point to where ever you want.  Mileage may vary depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

Crunchy Roll (Anime Streaming/Simulcasts, Manga) has an app for PS, is there a big difference between streaming from YouTube, Crunchy Roll, Netflix and PMS?

I've never had any problems with Cinavia on both the PS3 and PS4. i use the media server on PS3 and just streamed using the browser on PS4 and they worked without any muting what so ever.

Hey, anything new here? I really would love Plex for PS3. And of course on PS4, for everyone who already got one. Even XBox got the Plex Client. How come there is no app for Sony? I have a Roku3 connected to my TV, which works also. But I love the look of the Windows app more and would think it would be more similar to that, than the Roku app, if it were to come to PS3/PS4.

What do we have to do to make it come true?

Plex for XBox seems like such a waste though...

And why is that? Just curious (being an xbox owner).... I don't think it would be a waste for plex to have a ps4 app so maybe you'd care to elaborate, unless you wanted to sound like a sad, jealous fanboy.

There is a very well liked thread in the feature request forum about this (which I've even liked to help out). Grow up.

Gotta agree with you here.  Xbox 360 has millions of users Xbox One has plenty.  I don't see how any device that Plex is brought to could possible be a waste if it has enough users to utilize it.

well now sony offer options to not only develop games, also non-games applications, for ps3, ps4 and psvita so will be great if you guys can do this App for those systems.

I gave up on Plex (or Sony) every offering a native client on Playstation.  A shame as I'm a Lifetime Plex Pass holder, but it is what it is and I don't see it every changing.

Trying to use the PS4 web browser to my Plex server via the web app is frustrating. Whatever overhead there is in the PS4 browser or system software makes anything above ~ 4mbps (even with my PS4 and Plex server wired to the same gigabit switch) stutter and pause to be essentially unwatchable.  I said to h3ll with waiting and just put $30 Chromecast sticks on each TV (cheaper than a PS4 on each TV) where I want to watch and I just cast from the PlexPass app on my smartphone.  Every one of those Chromecast is on a wireless network and there's never a stutter or pause, and controlling playback is far easier on the screen of my phone than using the PS4 controller, so I'm happy.  If Plex every launches a native PS4 app I'm sure I'll give it a whirl, but otherwise I'm perfectly happy with my solution.

plex app for ps3 has been released. oh happy days. looks liek tis only in euro stores for the time being

Kinda funny I wrote that I had "given up hope" and literally the NEXT DAY a native Playstation Plex Client is announced.  https://blog.plex.tv/

Curious that Plex says in their blog post the interest in a native Plex client only came to their attention in October 2014, despite the fact this thread has been on their forums since Jun 2013.  Apparently the "right people" to get attention within Plex don't read these forums...

That is not what I take with me from the blog text. They say that they had been working on the PS4 client even before the Xbox client was being worked on. And the Xbox client was released in October.
