Plex Connect everything together

Hi everyone, I have a problem, when I imported my plex tv series collection it creates a tv series with a copy of all the others inside. I don’t know if I’ve been clear but I don’t know how to get rid of it.

I think i have the same problem. I don’t know if it would apply to all series - because I don’t want to reread the entire library. However, all newly added series are also grouped under a single series. If I only add one of these new ones at a time, it will be recognized correctly. To be on the safe side, the folder for the series is completely provided with the year and TMDB-ID. If another is added, then all under this first new series. All episodes are listed under the series that started first. I’ve tested this several times. This is probably only a problem after the latest update - because it seems to me that the series from before were read in correctly.

What is your folder structure, and what did you point Plex at for your library?

The proper structure would be (bold for the folder you point your show library at):
/Videos/TV Shows/The Simpsons (1989)/Season 01/Episode_Name.ext
/Videos/TV Shows/Family Guy(1995)/Season 01/Episode_Name.ext
etc.

If you do ANY more nesting of folders, that can screw up Plex. For example:
/Videos/TV Shows/Scooby_Doo_Shows/Scooby Doo, Where Are You! (1969)/ Season 01/Episode_Name.ext
/Videos/TV Shows/Scooby_Doo_Shows/Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated (2009)/ Season 01/Episode_Name.ext
Will get you strange results when you index the /TV Shows/ library.

So like I said - I had tried different ways. I’ll say right away that the problem has now been solved for me. I’ll say something about that at the end. So far the TV Shows have always been arranged in this way:

/TV Shows/Black Sails/S01/Black Sails - S01E01 - Episode Name.ext
/ TV Shows/Black Sails/S01/Black Sails - S01E02 - Episode Name.ext

/TV Shows/Black Sails/S03/Black Sails - S03E01 - Episode Name.ext

/TV Shows/Black Sails/S04/Black Sails - S04E01 - Episode Name.ext

In addition, the same designation as in the file name is stored in the title tag of the MKV file. This has worked without any problems so far and all TV Shows and episodes have been correctly identified and classified. Of course, there are only references to folders with TV Shows in the corresponding media library. On each hard drive in a NAS system there is a “TV Shows” folder. After recoding (downsizing) I wanted to store 3 more TV Shows on another additional hard drive in the NAS in this way - and then the problem described occurred. All TV Shows and episodes were generally stored under the TV Show that was read in first. Then I carried out further experiments with even more precise naming. In the way described in the article “Plex TV Show Naming Conventions” on www.plexopedia.com.

/TV Shows/Black Sails (2014) {tmdb 47665}/Season 01/Black Sails - S01E01 - Episode Name.ext

/TV Shows/Black Sails (2014) {tmdb 47665}/Season 04/Black Sails - S04E01 - Episode Name.ext

The result was the same. If I took all the new TV Shows out of this folder and left only one there at a time, that TV Show was recognized correctly - and that applied to each and every one of them. However, if more than one TV Show was in this folder, all episodes were added to this first TV Show - as duplicates. And unfortunately, unlike the films, it is not possible to split them up and assign them separately. Even films are sometimes not correctly recognized and saved as duplicates with another - but that can be easily fixed in this way. This is not the case with TV Shows. There is no way of influencing or editing and we have to rely on correct detection.

Note: Plex also runs on this NAS system - so they are all local folders for Plex.

Now to the solution for me and my system. I have now adjusted the folder structure below “TV Shows” in this way:

/TV Shows/Black Sails (2014)/S01/Black Sails - S01E01 - Episode Name.ext

Since there are now sometimes identical series titles for different productions, specifying the year is certainly an advantage. In addition, I did not have any further subdivisions / sub-folders within the “Series” structure - but above “TV Shows” there was one more level than with the references to the already existing hard drives. I have also adjusted that for the new hard disk so that the level depth is the same. Then I added each series and also each single season one after the other and carried out a search for each season individually. That actually worked and all series were recognized correctly. Whether it was the purely additional indication of the year or the adjustment of the level depth of the folder structure or the addition and search of each season individually - I cannot say with certainty now. I’m happy that it works - but my guess is that it could probably be due to the level depth of the folder structure. Maybe these tips will help someone.
