Could it be windows updates?
I’ve had some weird things happen to my computers with some updates.
Maybe worth installing back if you can to see if that helps.
Just a thought

I have the latest OS updates and my windows 10 machine is up to date. I also did a fresh windows install, still same issue. This issue only occurred when I updated the plex software
I’ve also installed the latest plex server software on my win7 laptop, same issue. so OS is not the issue
If it was a OS issue then why does 1.21.2.3939 have NO issues but the moment I install a newer version I get issues. An OS issues doesnt make any sense
I reinstalled plex with ver. 1.18.7.2438 and only had 1 disconnect is the past 48 hours. So the random and frequent disconnects is related to the new ver. of plex. Can someone else confirm this as well please
I’m having the same issue with Plex on my NAS Drive
running version 1.21.3.4046
remote access has been an issue lately, like others sometimes it works for a few minutes then shows as unavailable.
no network changes internally. static IP, port forwarding and upnp all set up (and has been working for years)
thread has been open nearly 3 years and this is still an issue for experienced plex users?
perhaps the issue isnt the at the users end?
ok I think I figured out my issue, I hope, Its been stable for the past 4 hours with no disconnections. I disabled DHCP on my verizon router and connected my ONT to the network switch directly. I enabled DHCP on the switch and reconfigured my VLAN. I have one cat7 from nic1 on the server to the switch port for VLAN1 and nic2 on the server going to the switch port for VLAN2. I also connected my verizon router to the switch so that my cable boxes can get the guide info and VOD and DVR info via MOCA. I also enabled port based QOS on the network switch for the 2 ports thats the server is connected to its been very stable. As you can tell my network setup isnt the avg setup lol
Not sure but I think with the router before the switch it created a double nat, the moment I put the switch first in the network everythings good
EDIT: I had a friend watch movies and tv shows off my server all day today and no disconnections. Its safe to safe the issue has been resolved
EDIT 2: I spoke to soon. Im averaging about 1 disconnection every 4-6 hours but at least its not disconnecting every few min. like it did before.
I think I narrowed down the issue. Had some network issues with my POE sonicwall wap getting ips so I put the original configuration back: ONT → Verizon router-> switch and discovers that the connection was stable but also dropping at the same rate it was before: about a or 2 disconnects about every 3-5 hours. I think this the verizon router. I just purchased a TP-Link AX6000 after about 2 hours of research to replace my verizon router. Should be here today, ordered it on amazon and its same day shipping, yay. Will update with results
If there are two routing devices then one needs to be switched to bridged/modem mode otherwise there would be a Double NAT
For default configuration for Remote Access, uPnP dynamic port forwarding is used and uPnP needs to be enabled in the router
Problems need to be investigated individually - and so logs and router configuration setup would be needed as mentioned earlier Plex Constantly Loses Remote Access - #454 by sa2000
there is no such thing as bridged mode on a layer 2 switch. I also had one cat 7 to my router and 1 cat7 to my switch and on my dell poweredge configured the it so the traffic was coming through the nic thats connected to the router. There shouldnt have been a doublenat, at least thats how Im looking at it
I’ve replaced the isp router with a nice fancier TP link router and so far that seems to have resolved my issue
Thanks for all the feedback
I am also having this issue. Running plex on Ubuntu server 20.04.2 LTS. This happens everyday now. I have to go into settings, then remote access, click enable remote access.
Only thing that has changed on my end was updating version of plex. My setup has stayed the same. Router, Server, IP, Port, etc…
I’m having the EXACT same issue. It has been working that past few months, but now every day after updating plex server a few times it just won’t stay connected remotely. I’ve tried everything I could find online.
If checking the possible problem areas outlined in this article https://support.plex.tv/articles/200931138-troubleshooting-remote-access/?_ga=2.224808346.1204614189.1616492025-1636442412.1613077385 does not identify the issue, please provide server debug logs when the problem arises plus details of the configuration for remote access
See info about logs in this post
I’ve been having this exact issue since the plex server update 2 weeks ago roughly. Been driving me up the wall. As soon as i try and access my Plex Server remotely, it will work with a relayed connection for about 30 seconds with reduced quality that can’t be changed because of the relay which i know is normal is some scenarios. If i try and do anything with the server side of things, my server disappears entirely. As soon as i get home, i have to enable remote access all over again and sometimes it sticks and sometimes it doesn’t. Happy to provide logs, running a synology RT2600ac router with the correct firewall rules in place, with the plex server hosted on a synology NAS with the correct firewall rules in place. Once again, to reiterate, it’s been working perfectly for over a year with the same hardware in place, and didn’t become an issue until the latest plex server update about 2 weeks ago. The Plex Server update that came out earlier this week did nothing to fix the problems as well.
So i have been doing some testing. My Plex server is hosted on a Synology NAS and i also use the Synology rt2600ac router. I’ve started going back over my firewall rules just to be safe and i found something interesting. Basically 3 rules, anything on my subnet can talk to anything else. One rule for a valheim server, and the plex forwarding rule port 32400. After that i have a Deny All rule that if traffic doesn’t match any of the rules it gets denied. I made one for TCP and one for UDP for testing purposes. If i activate the TCP version, Plex remote access is unavailable. If i turn it off and activate the UDP rule plex works fine. I even added another rule after some more reading allowing all Plex traffice from source ip’s in the US and Ireland (that’s where Plex’s AWS servers are hosted) and it’s the same deal, if Deny all TCP is activated remote access doesn’t work and vice versa with UDP. I’m not a TCP/IP newbie by any means, so this would seem to point to Plex connections are now using some sort of additional TCP connection that hasn’t been documented. I even downgraded my Plex Server version and the results are the same. I sure wish the plex admins would chime in here. Hope this helps in some way, i’m going to continue to test.
Ok I see that on the Plex server on my PC is showing my PC IP, but not the IP address of my WD P4100 Plex server. Is there a way to change it in the software on my PC to point to the Plex server?
