Plex constantly renaming titles

Server Version#: 1.26.1.5798

Because Plex does not any 4K designators on the artwork/name, I have my 4k content in it’s own library, and each one I rename 4K - name. This keeps it separated from other files, as well as easily identifiable on your home page/recently watched. Plex is unable to tell the difference from one or the other, and you can play a 1080p version in one library, and both versions will show up on homepage as being watched, with the same watch status… so this keeps them fully separate for my users.

That said, I have been having a really annoying issue as of late where Plex has decided it will randomly RENAME my titles for me. It only does this for SOME of the movies, like maybe 10 our of 40 or so, but it consistently does this week by week. It leaves the artwork alone (I have custom covers) but changes it from 4K - name to just name. Ex: 4K - Turning Red is changed to Turning Red over and over and over. I will go rename them again and it will stick for a few days to a week, then randomly I come back and those few are changed again.

Frozen ii, The Green Mile, Turning Red, Joker are the main repeat offenders, but I have a few more that do it randomly too.

What is going on and how to do stop it?

This is probably happening when the metadata for the item is being refreshed. You should be able to click the lock icon when editing fields to lock it from changing.

If you have your 4K media set to not be searchable (in the library settings) this will eliminate doubles 1080/4k progress from showing on the home screen etc. People will have to manually browse to anything they want to watch in 4K this way, but it does solve the problem.

To further add:

  1. With the 4K media in its own storage location & Library.
  2. Let the media files be named correctly.
  3. Add 4K posters like shown below in the folders with the media and let the Local Media Assets agent select and display those posters.

Most the posters do not have a 4k version, though some certainly do.
One of the main issues that PLEX itself has with 4K, which I kind of touched on, if you have the same movie in two different libraries, even though you played the item from one library, in your recently watched or continue watching it will show BOTH items.

In this example, I have Alien in my 4K library and was watching it, but when I look back both copies, the second being 1080p, non-directors cut, in a different library, in a different file location, also shows up with exact same time played on it.

Mind you that is just an annoyance, the plex changing my titles is the big issue I have, but I tried that lock and we will see how that goes. Would be really nice if Plex could add cover art overlays, like 3D, 4K, 8K (as well as directors cut, extended, etc)… etc. Of course you would want to allow the people to chose which ones it overlays, as well as what art to use, heck and even allow them to chose their own art! Sans that, it would be really nice to be able to have multiple copies, and there is an EASILY seen way to let the user know there is multiple copies and to select which they prefer, ex: Aliens (720p, 1080p, 4K) and when they go to play it, they can chose a copy, or if setup previously (default) play the lowest resolution copy that would better match your Quality settings (which means bandwidth limited, as well as if you have auto adjust maybe have it seamlessly move to a different lower quality copy if the transcode is going too many… like 4k to 720p or something).

Always appreciate how active you are ChuckPa, and I know, it is easy to modify the cover adding the 4k banner on top, work I do not wish to do with hundreds of titles.

Will need more days to be sure, but looks like doing the lock icon on the title SO far is working, at least for that issue

It has been days later and doing the lock on the name has forced it to stay. Still wish we had better support for differentiating 4k, 8k, 3d media, but this solves my issue for now.

You may wish to check this out, it can add overlays to posters such as 4KDV, Atmos etc. I was tempted to try it, but I just finished switching my posters back. I prefer the clean poster look myself.
