Plex Crashes Immediately After Launch on New Pixel After Android Backup Restore

Server Version#: 4.157.0
Player Version#: 2025.31.1 com.plexapp.android

I recently upgraded to a new Pixel phone and restored my apps and data using the standard Android backup process. Ever since then, the Plex app crashes instantly on launch. I’ve found a Reddit thread in r/Plex ( Reddit - The heart of the internet ) with a lot of people reporting the exact same issue after restoring a backup to a new device, so it doesn’t seem isolated.

A factory reset appears to be the only confirmed fix, but I’m really reluctant to wipe my entire phone just to get Plex working again. Before resorting to that, I’ve tried every workaround I could find, including:

  • Clearing Plex’s cache and storage

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the app multiple times

  • Turning off Android app‑data backup before reinstalling

  • Installing Plex while offline which fails with an error stating the app is not compatible with my device, even though I copied the APK as it was installed by the Play Store.

  • Using ADB to:

    • Uninstall Plex for user 0

    • Attempt to clear any leftover data

    • Check for hidden or ghost installs

  • Checking for leftover data in system folders (blocked by Android restrictions)

Despite all of this, Plex still crashes immediately on launch. At this point it seems like the restored app data is corrupted and stuck somewhere the user can’t access and Plex can’t start because of it. A fix that doesn’t require a full factory reset would be hugely appreciated.

I’ve solved this issue. It was caused by the fact that my old Pixel was on a higher Android build than my new one. Both Android 16, just not the same security updates. Once I upgraded it, Plex no longer crashes.
