It’s not possible with watch live TV without subtitles. They’re on by default, and if you turn them off, the player crashes. I’ve made a video to demonstrate:
This affects iOS and Apple TV.
Server is Debian 9/Stretch - TV source is an HDHomeRun Prime.
Is this happening with the the Enhanced Player enabled or disabled? If enabled, try disabling it.
The bug happens identically with the enhanced player on or off, doesn’t make a difference.
Are subtitles enabled by default in the Apple TV / iOS settings (not Plex app settings)?
If they’re off already, toggle them on and the off again.
They were off. I toggled them, but it made no difference. Subtitles still came on, turning them off still crashed the app.
This so weird, I can’t get subtitles to stay on from show to show 
I have to select them every time once playback for live TV starts.
This will be like hitting it with a hammer, but you could try deleting the app from your iOS device and seeing if that helps. Note: if you have any sync’d/downloaded content in Plex, it will be deleted.
OK well I gave it a go. (And discovered another bug: It says “we noticed you have more than one plex server” and then gave me a list of… one. I only have one.)
…this might have actually fixed it? Subtitles now don’t show by default - although the settings show they they should and that a subtitle track is selected. (‽)
So I guess I’m concerned that the first time I watch a recorded program with the subtitles on, the bug will return.
Hi David, any chance you could send me logs from either iOS or tvOS immediately after this happens?

How can I get appletv logs? There is no mail client on AppleTV.
