PLEX Dashboard Empty

I spent a fair amount of time looking around and perhaps I just didnt realize an answer was right under my nose so I apologize in advance if this issue has already been posted..

I have a wired connected XBOX ONE and just installed the PLEX app. I have the lifetime PLEX PASS membership and currently have PLEX working perfectly on my Roku 3 on another tv.

Allow me to describe in detail the issue I am having in hopes I do not find myself going around and around attempting to find solutions. When I boot up my XBOX ONE looking at the screen shots from the PLEX website I expected to have the "dashboard" seen from my Roku but once I enter the pairing code and open the PLEX app from the XBOX ONE Interface I notice the computer the PLEX Media Server is installed on is listed in the upper right and the PLEX logo in the upper left and below the logo is the word LIBRARY and a blank screen.

After reading and getting in over my head about DLNA and other settings I soon found myself getting irritable as no where that I was able to find from the PLEX website did it say anything about specific network type configurations but simply following a 3 step (get plex pass, install app, pair).

'

After hours of endless troubleshooting I discovered I could add "watch later" programming but this is a far cry from expecting to see the PLEX dashboard as advertised using XBOX ONE similar to what I see when I use PLEX from my Roku. I realize my Roku and XBOX are two completely different devices but according to PLEX the user design and use were to be similar from what I took anyway.

After sending an email stating what is in this post I received a response saying to try the troubleshooting using this link below and also take advantage of the forum.

I did all the suggestions and still nothing. I think this may come down to not understanding how to use PLEX on my XBOX ONE even though PLEX website lets you believe its a simple three step process mentioned above. Any help would be very appreciated.

Hi

1) Can you see your server if you login on https://plex.tv/ ?

2) Did you try a hard reboot of your xbox ? (Hold the power button for ~10 seconds until the Xbox is completely shut off and then start it again)

3) Could you maybe take a photo from what you see on the TV ?

Hi

1) Can you see your server if you login on https://plex.tv/ ?

Yes I can. Both at http://plex.tv/web/appAND inside the server itself. I see all my channels just as I would see them on Roku and am able to click settings etc..

2) Did you try a hard reboot of your xbox ? (Hold the power button for ~10 seconds until the Xbox is completely shut off and then start it again)

Yes. I did a hard reboot and even powercycled everything including pc the server is on, modem, router, and xbox.

3) Could you maybe take a photo from what you see on the TV ?

Done. You see it below. I added two random programs to the WATCH LATER section just to see what would happen. Sorry for the blurriness my phone sucks. BTW, I forgot to mention how I saw on a post somewhere I should have the icon of PLEX has a network location where I click My Computer and I don't have it there. Would that present a problem?

Is it possible that you did not create a movie or tv-show library inside PLEX ?

These two are basically the only libraries Plex displays at the xbox one at the moment.

Also as you wrote "channels" => these are also not supported at the moment.

I simply followed the four steps below..

https://plex.tv/xbox

Can someone explain to be by doing those steps in the link above does not give me the image below?

Im not trying to be difficult but PLEX doesn't go nearly far enough to explain to those already using PLEX on other devices prior to when it was available for the XBOX, following these 4 simple steps will NOT mimic what you are familiar with.

Enjoy your personal library of movies and TV shows on the big screen! Plex for Xbox One and Xbox 360 delivers an enhanced entertainment experience that feels right at home on Xbox by connecting with your Plex Media Server that provides effortless organization of your media.

Perhaps my complete ignorance relating to technology may be responsible but the quote above has me confused with 'library". I turn on my Roku and I see a directory of my different channels I had to go and find and download after setup where once the channel is downloaded I click find a program from that channel and start playing. Someone using PLEX for Roku Im sure understands the simple plug and play type ready to go usability.

So if I am understanding correctly for XBOX I must create different libraries ie Movies, TV Shows, Music, Photos, Home Videos? I did that starting with Movies but it says I must create a folder, for what? Will I download content from elsewhere and put them in these folders? Do I create the corresponding folder on my desktop or inside the Plex folder or something? Then where do I get and how do I watch the programs?

I was sold this is by far the best alternative for cable for almost anyone when using it with almost any video device so I cut the cord, got roku and installed the sever on my computer and been happy ever since. Then I got XBOX for Christmas and soon after PLEX announced it was releasing a XBOX app. I was excited in thinking I could use PLEX in my other room, not the case it seems.

It's incredibly frustrating on the Plex XBOX page above they give 4 simple steps to set up the app on XBOX with nothing about having to set up libraries. None of this has to be done with my Roku.  Perhaps PLEX should add a step 5, 6 and 7 to cover these steps so morons like me can figure it out.

I appreciate all the help and thank you in advance for what appears to be the hand holding I need to get this going.

The Xbox One client is still in the early access/preview stage and does not have the complete functionality of a completed client.  Because of this Channels (Which I am guessing is what you're using on the Roku) and Music are not yet available on the Xbox One client.

The libraries tab you are seeing is for Media (Movies and TV Shows) you have either downloaded or ripped from DVD/Blurays's and stored in a location your server can access.  This support article talks more about creating libraries:

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200288926-Creating-Libraries

But for example:

If you wanted a library folder with Disney Movies, you would:

Create a library.

Name it: Disney Movies (Or whatever you wanted)

Add Folder: Select the folder that contains the movie files

Add Library

At this point Plex will scan the library look for movie files that match the Plex naming conventions and begin adding them to the library along with their metadata(Studio, Actors, Plot, etc)

The naming conventions can be found here:

Thanks a lot McKee for the valuable info. No where on the PLEX site or even here in the forums was I able to find such a comprehensive reply providing the detail anyone new to PLEX should know. Since I am a lifetime PLEX PASS member I hope the roll out for XBOX will be sooner than later because I prefer to have the on demand streaming versus having to got the trouble to have to create directories and folders and having to burn/rip content. If I wanted to do all that I would of just kept cable. I see they are planning a "major update" for Roku.. Anyone know how XBOX users can follow when there will be updates to make it a full client?

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/130706-plex-for-xbox-one/

If you click the follow this topic in that thread you will get an email when they post a new update with the release notes for the Xbox One client.

From what I've been told the next update for Xbox is going to be great, but no details were given as to what is going to be included in the update.

-edit

Accidentally linked wrong release topic.  Switched it to Xbox One instead of Xbox 360
