Plex Discover: Advertisements?

OK, not really advertisements but I just clicked on an actress to see if I had any other movies or shows she was in and saw a new Discover screen for the first time. I was quite impressed until I realized that the shows/movies with an “On Plex” tag we actually “advertising” things available from plex.tv (or wherever “Movies & Shows” streams from) rather than from my plex server. There were no marks at all to indicate which things were actually found on my system!
[…time passes…]
Hmmm… tags eventually appeared that showed which items were available from my server, too. OK. The delay is sad, but understandable, I suppose – I guess my server doesn’t know everything about its own library, but can quickly access one across the internet that knows everything about every actor, movie and show, right?

Is there any way to change the very confusing (for me and my users) “On Plex” tag with something else? Perhaps, “Available from External Streaming Service (perhaps for an added fee)”, which much more clearly states the facts. Since me (and my users) always start an app named “Plex” to access my server, the tag “On Plex” very clearly indicates that the media is available from the connected plex server – it does not clearly indicate that the connected server must either get the media stream from a third source or redirect the player to a third source.

I know I’m an idiot and you’re all geniuses who never confuse similar things, but imagine someone searching on their Netflix app, finding a movie tagged as “On Netflix” and finding out that they are actually streaming it from Paramount (and Netflix might add the cost to their monthly bill.) That is exactly how I feel about the misleading “On Plex” on the search results I’m seeing.

FWIW, I have disable all online media sources in my server settings, yet these tags still appear and warn me that something will be enabled if I choose to view on of the “On Plex” items. Something I already disabled. Sigh.

It is advertising and done via stealth taking folks away from our plex content and over to their content. We now no longer can disable this online content from our own media. I find it disgusting but I’m very much in the minority !

I thought sources were clearly disaggregated if I’m not mistaken, with priority to media on the server front and centre and other way below. Am I missing something?

I run my plex server and I curate my content on my plex server. That is why I purchased it many years ago.

I do not want any links whatsoever to anything that goes beyond my server. Up until they rolled this cast feature out I could control this. I no longer can. Pretty much everything within Known For or Filmography (IMO) is an advertisement from plex on where to view content.

As a reminder, this feature is not mandatory and can be disabled by enabling “Include adult content” in your libraries. Obviously this disables the consolidated credits view for actors, but it does eliminate the perceived advertising. This also won’t help folks who want their cake and to eat it too; right now you have to decide which is more important to you (the consolidated credit information or that lack of other places to watch).

Note: That setting’s name is a bit of a misnomer in that it doesn’t cause any adult content to be pulled into your libraries; it only allows potentially adult content to be matched by the scanner (and data to be retrieved by the agent).

Unfortunately, that’s not true. That (temporary limitation) only removes it when clicking on cast members within libraries, its still there under search and cannot be removed from there.

Are you certain of that? I’ve got every “Online Media Source” disabled for my account. When I search for an actor and select the “People” option, it shows their “Known For.” However, when selecting one of those, if it’s not in my library, I have no other viewing options, Plex or otherwise.

For example, if I search for Kate Hudson and then select “Fool’s Gold” from the know for list, I see the following:

Again, I understand that you’re leaving a lot of functionality on the table if you disable all these features, but it does get one closer to the goal of only showing their local content.

Note: My testing was done using the web client.

Unfortunately, 100% certain :frowning: Just search Kate Hudson and the result will pop up under people. When you then go to their cast profile, boom you have Known For and Filmography with all the plex stuff I don’t want. Enabling Include adult content in your libraries has no impact on this.

Would be so easy if they would just give us control to disable those sections → Remove "Known For and Filmography" from Cast Discover Credits  like we can with the rest of the discover stuff …

Anyhow, I live in hope !

Hmm… Your experience is different than mine then. When performing that search and selecting them, I can see the filmography. However, if it’s not in my library, I have no viewing options (my “Watch from these locations (Beta)” is empty).

Keep in mind that on this page https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/online-media-sources
if you select “Disable for Managed Users”, it means that it is NOT disabled for yourself because as the admin you are not a managed user.

Switch that to “Disabled” and you will only see sources from your own servers or from servers which are shared with you.

This setting is per user account, not per server. So if you have family members with “full” Plex accounts added to your Plex Home, you will have to repeat these settings in their accounts.

For dokuro, it’s not the fact that Plex lists “There are no streaming services currently available for this title.” under “Fool’s Gold”, it’s that this title showed up at all. By searching Kate Hudson, dokuro expects that ONLY movies that their server contains would show up under her name. The fact that in her profile it lists every single movie/show that Hudson has been in at all is what dokuro is upset about.

I can see the wish for a small self-contained server in which EVERYTHING that shows up is watchable within the program. I don’t want it for myself, but I think it should be an option available to us, which is what dokuro wants.

I suspect we are talking about different things so let me be precise.

Taking the Kate Hudson example, do a search for her. I have decided NOT to have the movie Fool's Gold on my server. My server, my choice. However, once I select her cast page I get a list of Known For and Filmography which lists this movie. Taking this one step further, now if select this movie and I’m taken away from my personal server and am presented with plex owns online content including a bunch of extras for the movie.

I do not want this. I have all the plex online, discover stuff disabled and even have extra’s disabled on my libraries yet plex have decided to pollute my perfectly curated server with their content. Just because they wrapped it up under the guise of a cast page does not make it right IMO.

Exactly. I’m sure lots of folks find this useful but give us the option. We don’t want this in our house for VERY specific reasons I’ll not get into here.

Maybe the suggestion would be once the below is toggled, then it should disable searches through people as well, but this is slightly different matter from the tone of the user who created the thread I believe…

I disagree. IMO, plex has purposely designed this new cast page to advertise their cloud content and discover features. That’s exactly the question in this thread.

No. That’s what you are trying to make it about. But it’s not what the OP was asking.

@anon5074910

I’ll step away so. Don’t want to troll or labour the point. Thanks folks.

Actually, dokuro is pretty much restating what I was trying to say in my original post here. My only variance was that I also asked for a way to change the labels used for things like “On Plex” to something less confusing IF it will not be possible to disable all of those unwanted results.

Pretty much, all I want to see in the search results is whether or not something is available from my Plex server or not. That’s it. I don’t mind seeing all of the things I don’t have, but I don’t want to be misled into thinking that I have them and/or being led to watch them from somewhere else.
