Plex displays wrong colours with Dolby Vision on AppleTV 4k

Just bumped into the purple/green bug with my 2019 Nvidia shield using Plex player on a 4k Dolby vision movie

Also tried the Samsung Plex app to rule out the shield. Purple and green on the Samsung Plex app too.

@plex team thank you for fixing this asap

The last update made it worse for me. Now I hear sound but no picture, just a spinning wheel.

Just to clarify is your only TV a Samsung?
If so you need to avoid anything that’s Dolby Vision profile 5.

yeah a few weeks ago I swapped back to my old shield TV instead of my 2021 Apple TV because of the HDR and color banding issues. now the shield app has HDR issues too, and same with the LG app. So plex is completely broken with HDR and HEVC videos for me.

I had to swap back in my 2021 Apple TV so I can use Infuse to watch HDR and HEVC. Getting pretty tired of this, why is it so hard for a dedicated media player to play supported media formats properly.

That is odd, the Plex app works fine on my Sony TV for DV content.

for me it’s profile 5 that is for sure broken, maybe some other profiles work ok.

My Sony X900H plays them all fine too for the most part. Sometimes it struggles with some files because it’s underpowered. But there’s definitely an issue between Android clients as well.

So you have different TV’s to play different movies?? Haha. This is a Plex player bug, other players don’t go green and purple. Prob not gonna be hot swapping my large tv screen depending on the show I’m watching :joy:

Actually no, it plays all profiles on my Sony TV just fine, whereas the same DV file will show up as green and purple if I play it via Plex on Apple TV 4K.

Yeah what I was getting at was that Plex/Emby/Jellyfin cannot tonemap Dolby Vision ( at least not yet.)

You mentioned having a Samsung TV that can’t handle Dolby Vision so I was simply asking if any of your TV’s were capable of Dolby Vision?

If not why go to the trouble of collecting the only kind of Dolby Vision profile that doesn’t have HDR fallback?

I’m not trying to be snarky, I’m just trying to get my head around your setup and also I’m not sure why anything I said I implied I have different TV’s.
What I have is irrelevant. I’m not the one having playback issues. The devices you have is what’s important.

In March this issue will be a YEAR old - sorry but this is just ridiculous. Wish Plex team would stop adding superfluous features and fix core stuff.

@Orko @Ridley Can we get any update on this please? It’s really killing our watch experience.

I joined this forum 8 years ago, but have been a Plex user since almost the beginning. If the Plex team have failed to learn a lesson in ALL that time, it’s that silence certainly ain’t golden.

Yeah I was considering going down and buying a Dolby vision TV as a possible solution. But then I tried it on my computer and I get the same green and purple there. So definitely I can’t buy all Dolby vision screens. The player has to be able to display this normally on a non dv screen

Again there is one specific DV profile that can ever possibly display the green/pink on any display with any client.
It’s a profile you have to specifically go out of your way to grab those files.

not really, it’s pretty common. more like you need to go out of your way to avoid it.

Even if that were true (it’s not) that still doesn’t fix the problem. In reality, like the guy above me said, it’s a real common format and not as rare as you say

Lol yeah it’s a very common format. Almost everything I have in DV is in that format.

I took the plunge and tried Infuse…considering just buying the lifetime version, since it’s updated pretty regularly and I like that. Try it, and you will never look back at Plex

infuse’s playback is great, but the UI is so lacking I can’t use it as a daily driver.
