I’m running Plex server on a Mac (Catalina) and have a Plex Pass but it will not record live TV. I have an HDHomerun and I can watch live TV; I can set a show to record in the guide but a recording never happens; no error messages are generated. When I am watching live TV I can see the tuner light on the HDHomerun light up. When I set a time to record the tuner light on the HDHomerun does not light up and nothing records. Even if I continue to watch live TV (tuner light on), when I reach the time that a show should record, on the same channel I’m watching, it does not record. My recording library remains empty. Am I missing a setting somewhere that would let me record a show?
More information will help like model of tuner, did it ever work, and your set up. In the meantime, here are some tips.
- Make sure the latest firmware is installed on the HDHomerun.
- Maybe you don’t have enough available free space. Check to see how much storage space you have available to record. If you don’t have enough free space, it will fail.
- Perhaps the permissions or other setting on the invisible “.grab” folder may be jacked. This is where Plex initially stores the temp files for DVR. Check contents or rename the folder before you delete.
- try testing just recording something you are live watching, not just something scheduled for the DVR.
Good luck
Also if the show or movie already exists in your library it will not record it again.
Thanks for your suggestions enduser. The tuner worked with the Elgato software (but they never moved to 64 bit) and does work with Plex for live TV; firmware is up to date; there are 1.34 TB available.
I couldn’t find the “.grab” folder. Well it’s invisible, right? But while looking I reset the folder I was trying to record to: it’s on an external disk and my path was “Kahru/Plex/TV”. When I reset the path from the pop up menu it appeared as “Volumes/Kahru/Plex/TV”. Don’t know how the difference occurred; perhaps I originally typed in the path instead of using the selector. Later that evening I discovered that Plex had recorded a program that I had scheduled and now seems to be working well.
I guess Plex needed the improved path to find the “.grab” folder so thanks for suggestion 3 that led me there.
@coperc Glad it worked out. I was a big fan of Elgato’s EyeTV. I think I almost owned every one of their EyeTV devices, until the HDHomerun became supported.
Regarding EyeTV 64-bit, there was an update by the new owners recently that runs 64-bit. I have not tried it personally and the reviews were not stellar, but… https://www.geniatech.eu/product/eyetv-4/
