Plex does not show embedded album cover art

Ah, cheers! I’m on the beta (would you expect any less from me? :plexheart:), and not seeing any changes yet, but I’ll keep an eye out for future builds!

Does that include a fix for where it uses the Plex-supplied poster for season background even when you have a season-specific background on the server as a local file?

I recently updated to the beta version 1.43.0.10231 and this issue seems to be resolved. Refreshing metadata updates the album art to the embedded art.

I can confirm this is working again for me.

Thanks for fixing this @drzoidberg33! :plexheart:

Well this is odd then….I’m on 1.43.0.10231 (and have been since it’s release 7 days ago).

I’ve added some new albums today and … generic covers … embedded artwork being ignored. Yet I hadn’t seen this prior to today.

As an example I already had Springsteen’s “Nebraska (2014 Remaster)” in the library - tagged as such.

Today I’ve added the 4 discs that make up “Nebraska ‘82” - each tagged as “Nebraska ‘82 Disc x”.

They don’t even appear on the new items type view - because Pex has decided that they are ALL “Nebraska (2014 Remaster)” - complete mess. Even after deleting the 2014 version I can’t get Plex to see them as anything other than that!

These aren’t the only ones either - so it’s not just somethjing specific to this album.

Check music brainz for Nebraska 82. It might also take a few days for it to sync with plex. But other than that, try unmatching the album completely.

What is your metadata preference setup?

As far as I’m aware Plex shouldn’t be attempting to use anything other than local metadata - so MusicBrainz ought to be irrelevant.

Settings are:-

Scanner - Plex Music

Agent - Plex MUsic

Prefer local metadata

Album Art - Both Plex Music and Local Files (ok, maybe an issue here)

But it isn’t even using the embedded album title - it’s using one from a totally different set of files - because it must think they are one and the same.

OK, changed the Album Art to Local Files Only, told it to refresh Metadata for the affected albums - made zero difference - it’s just doing what it wants as best as I can tell.

I found something weird still which might going on in your situation. If an album is not matched plex is still not using the embedded art still.

I had a matched album and the embedded art was displaying → Good

I unmatched the album, and all art options disappeared, including the embedded art. It instead displayed the artist art as the album cover → weird

I matched the album again and it applied the embedded art once again → Good ig unless your album can’t be matched.

Sounds likely to be the issue doesn’t it….hopefully somebody in the team will pick this up…

Same here. Mine is set to recognize cover.jpg in the same folder as the music files. Has been working for years. This broke with the most recent update.

I’m having the same issue. I’ve used Kid3 to confirm the files have the cover art embedded. I’ve tied all different combinations of agents and scanners.

I have the same missing album art issue that squishy notes at the start of the thread. It is happening with MP3 and FLAC files with correctly embedded album art and a folder.jpg file in the directory.

Plex is also renaming albums and tracks. I have several examples of this, here is one:

I have 2 versions of Stick Figure’s album “Set In Stone”; an instrumental version and one with lyrics. Both are tagged correctly, have correct artist, album and file names that follow the Plex guidelines, both have folder.jpg files matching the album.

Plex shows both of them as the version with lyrics. To fix it I have to unmatched and fix match the album.

MusicBrainz has both albums named the same way as I do.

I am on Version 1.43.0.10231.

Scanner - Plex Music Scanner

Agent - Personal Media Artists

I am having this error. I can add albums, they even match properly, but the album art is blank and just uses the artist photo.

I have the album cover in the folder and I have the album art embedded in the tags.

Plex Music agent is selected, but respect local metadata is also selected (which I need).

Never had an issue in the past.
