Plex doesn't see TNAS server (after password reset)

After having to reset my password and sign out all devices, my TNAS server is no longer seen on Plex.
It’s not showing up in the authorized devices list either.
Tried uninstalling, reinstalling, tried older version, checked permissions, restarted server, etc.

At my wits end after trying for hours.

I’m using a TERRAMASTER running TNAS with newest version of Plex Media Server.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you!

From what I can tell this is a very common problem after the password reset. I’m having the exact same issue. Plex doesn’t see my server at all. I changed nothing but my password. That was it.

Yep. Same here. I was finally able to connect to my Plex server on my PC, but not the one I run in a cloud system.

I can see the server on the Plex app on my Mac, but there are red (or yellow-it changes sometimes) exclamation marks next to all my media folders. When I click on my Movies tab, for example, it says either (depending on the direction of the wind, I guess) that I don’t have access to that content or that my server is offline. My server is not offline. I can play all my content on my Mac by accessing the folders directly and clicking on a title. My permissions are correct as well. It’s like they disassociated my server from my Plex account.

I just added a tuner to my tnas so I can get out from under my cable company, now everyone in my house is ready to kill me. I’ve put 10 hours into finding my server and nothing. I pulled an old laptop out and fired it up this morning, it had a server on it from last year and went right to it. It’s just a shame there’s no one to really ask for help.

Yeah, it’s become a major pain in the neck.

It’s so frustrating.

Uninstalling, reinstalling, etc is not necessary.

When you reset your password it logged you out of all devices, including your server.

The server is now in an unclaimed state.

You need to re-claim the server

From a system on the same network as the NAS, use an incognito browser window pointed at the IP address of the NAS: http://nas_ip_address:32400/web (ex: http://10.11.12.13:32400/web).

You should then be able to login to the NAS and claim the server in Settings → Server_Name → General.

If you are remote from the NAS, you will need to setup a SSH tunnel first.

See the On a Different Network section of the Plex Media Server Installation document.

Also the Troubleshooting Plex Media Server Claiming section of What if Your Plex Account Requires a Password Reset?

I logged in through an incognito browser window.
After going to settings, I just see my laptop server that I temporarily setup and not my TNAS. So it’s still not showing up. I’m is local on my network and connected directly into the router.

Pointed at the IP address of your NAS?

Just confirming, since an unclaimed server will not appear when using app.plex.tv.

There is another option, involving editing the preferences.xml file for Plex Media Server.

This places your Plex Server in an unclaimed state. You can then reclaim it by logging in via http://nas_ip_address:32400/web.

I run Plex on a Synology NAS. I’m not familiar with the Terramaster GUI or other specifics, so adjust accordingly. Synology has a text editor in their web interface. If Terramaster has the equivalent, it can be used to edit the file. You can also edit it via SSH/CLI if desired.

  1. Stop Plex Media Server.
  2. Navigate to the Plex Data Folder.
  3. Edit the preferences.xml file.
  4. There are 4 values to remove. The are all of the form Name="Value"
    Remove the Name="Value" pairs for:
  • PlexOnlineUsername
  • PlexOnlineToken
  • PlexOnlineMail
  • PlexOnlineHome (if it exists)
  1. Save changes.
  2. Restart Plex Media Server.
  3. Point an incognito browser window at the NAS: http://nas_ip_address:32400/web.
  4. If the setup wizard appears, you can skip it, since your libraries, etc already exist.

Yes, using the address of the NAS.

I found that file and removed the four elements mentioned, and it still is not seeing it.

I’ve logged into an old PC and an old android phone with my new password, and the old Nas server pops up. It allows me to select it, but once I’m fully logged in it goes away. I’ve reinstalled PMS on my server 20 times now and nothing is happening. I don’t know what they did at Plex, but Terramaster ain’t having any part of it :joy:

Ok folks, I finally got it working. The traditional methods of modifying the XML file didn’t work for me, but this did…

  1. First. Stop the Plex Media Server and close.

  2. In File Manager:

  • Go to the Volume. In my case, it’s “Volume #1.”
Click on the User tab at the top.
    Then I saw three options
  • Admin
  • Name of my media server
  • Plex.
    DELETE the Plex folder.

Then open the program. You may get an error that says “A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server…”
If you get that message, close your browser window/tab, and launch again.

You will then get the options like it was brand new and it saw my server.

Hope this helps!

I’m working on this right now, but I have a question. After you deleted the new “Plex” folder and PMS came back online, was all the Metadata still there? I’ve had to rebuild my library data twice this year, I’m pretty worn out trying to find it. Thanks for the extra info

Unfortunately I had to rebuild the libraries and all relevant metadata contained. Including the ones that I corrected manually before the “Plex incident.”

However I will say that ever since rebuilding my library in early September, I have not had to do it again.

Hopefully it’s the last time you have to do it again.

well it looks like I won’t have to find out. There was some new upgrade to the TNAS-PC app and TOS5 yesterday, now I can’t delete that Plex Folder. I can’t delete any folders. lol. I think I may just go back to using old laptops and external drives. This is aweful.
