Plex doesn't update any metadata - "unable to find media provider"

Server Version#: 1.25.9.5673
Logs: Plex Media Server Logs_2022-04-03_02-08-16.zip - Google Drive

Plex cannot recognise any of my media files after clean reinstall.

Steps I completed:

  • Install & Reinstall at least 5 times, using Revo Uninstaller (removes even registry and file leftovers)
  • Flushed DNS
  • Disabled Firewall
  • Run program as admin
  • Tried old agent - Got mixed results. Some got recognised, some not.
  • Tried previous version from 2021 december - same issue

All settings are on default, I ran out of solutions, no hits on google on my problem, I’m completely out of ideas.

[ERROR] - [MetadataAgent/tv.plex.agents.series] Unable to find media provider
[WARNING] - Scanner [Plex TV Series]: unable to find cloud match for item file

Screenshots:

Unfortunately your media is poorly named so the plex TV agent cannot match it. Using this as an example …

D:\Sorozatok\Tom.es.Jerry.Gyujtemeny.1-12-SeriesLand\Tom es Jerry Gyujtemeny 7-12 (by SeriesLand)\Gyujtemeny 12\01-A Cirkuszi Elefant.avi

You need to use this naming scheme Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files | Plex Support. The examples at the bottom of the document are excellent.

It’s not the problem. I could fix the match manually on the old installation, worked before, did not had any media without a proper match, I had a flawlessly set up library. Now nothing is getting recognized. Not even the poperly named ones. Not a single series or movie.

Just because it worked before does not mean it will work now. The new scanner/agent has been built from scratch and stuff that previously matched may no longer match anymore due to significant code changes from plex.

I’d be fairly confident this is a naming issue, your TV Seasons don’t even have the SxxExx naming in the example above but if you want to wait for others to jump on the thread then feel free.

Neither working with the old agent. It finds like two series, leaves 40 other blank. I appreciate your intention to help, but 100% it’s not the issue. There’s a single instance on Google with this error code, if the naming convention would be the problem, I would have like 10.000+ matching results. Also, it did work with the new agent.

BTW… You cannot switch agent/scanner on a library which has used the new modern one. It will break things and cause known problems. Only way to truly test is to create libraries from scratch.

Anyhow, have given my 2 cents, best of luck with it.

@HomeroomTeacher I took a look at the logs, and it will second the comment from dokuro. At a minimum you should get the root show names correct. naming like Dark.S01.iNTERNAL.1080p.WEB.x264-STRiFE will cause the scanner to fail. Not sure which series it is but I would replace that with Dark (2019)

If you want to save yourself a lot of time I would recommend using Download - tinyMediaManager and use ${showTitle} - S${seasonNr2}E${episodeNr2} - ${title} as the new name format.

Found a workaround fix for those unfortunate who stumble upon on this error code in the future:

What will not work, not even with “Fix match” - New Plex scanner. Totally dead. I’m at the point maybe only Windows 10 reinstall will get this working, or something messed up in the API.

Step 1: Libraries - Add library

Step 2: Go to advanced, select Plex Movie Scanner or Plex Series Scanner.

Step 3: If you add series, use the TheTVDB agent, if you add movies, select “The Movie Database” - with this, you will still get the blank posters, error messages, etc, but at least this way the “Fix Match” function will work, unlike with the new agent.

Step 4: Go through every single one of your movies, fix match manually. Then it will recognise the movie or series, put the seasons and episodes in correct order. You will be permanently stuck with the “upgrade to the new agent” icon. Funny thing here even if there’s one option and plex cannot miss, you still need to select that from Match / Fix match in order to make it work.

Sad to see that the agents, which worked with a little to no assistance in the past now completely disfunctional, and you have to specify almost each and every movie you add if you get this bug. I don’t think I will ever update Plex again, because it always messes up something in a long term. Bugs caused by updates was the main reason I had to reinstall (server refused skipping, had same issue on other computer as well).

@HomeroomTeacher This isn’t Plex’s fault. Your file naming schema is so bad Plex cannot parse it. When you are doing the manual matching it does “fix” it because it manually matches the files/folders to something Plex understands.

See above where I suggested a solution to cleanup your naming issues. Ill bet that once the naming is fixed your manual process isnt needed.

I have a few series and movies with bad naming convention - I had it before, I was okay to fix the match, I’m using this software for years. My problem is that series and movies which were recognised before (with the new agent) are now not getting recognised. I never had this issue after countless of reinstalls.

Also isn’t it suspicious you will only get one result on my problem on the entire internet? Bad naming is a common issue here. If my issue would relate to that, don’t you think this error code would be swarming over google?

Well I should’ve take the advice of that single Reddit match on the Google. Changing the DNS server from my ISP to Google Name servers solved the issue. No more errors.

Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

on IPV4 adapter settings. Something Vodafone did and Plex server doesn’t like it. I mark the topic as solved.
