Plex Download Feature - Big Backwards Step - All not Lost?

Sorry, I don’t have any update. We’re still unable to identify what’s causing this crash. Would you mind sharing your server with me? I’d like to see if maybe there is something with the interaction to your server that might be causing this. Send an invite to my username moviefan.plex.

Please find a new debug file taken immediately after a crash:
PlexDebugInfo-sstam6-8.0-2166 (2022-04-02 15.00.16 -0700).zip (14.4 MB)

I hope this time you can find something meanful.

Hi ya,

So plex on apple devices has gotten kind of weird the last few years. I never had to reboot appleTV/iphone etc to get plex to run properly. Delayed/very slow interface, Posters showing up slowly or not at all, media barely being able to play after a long hang, pauses and hangs in video. On appletv you can replicate this every time by starting netflix then closing it then starting plex or in whatever order you want. By close i mean swipe up on it. On iphone you used to be able to flush memory by holding down the power button until the swipe to power down then holding down the home button. It would wipe memory without rebooting.

Question. How big is your library? I am thinking maybe that has something to do with it if it is large. Mine is pretty large as well. Maybe all of the new features no one uses is chewing up resources or not giving them back… or its storing too much metadata … shrug. Netflix runs after plex has been running but plex will not run after netflix has been running. I think it does the same thing with amazon and disney but I dont watch those enough to say it with any certainty.

Good Luck!!

Plex did not publish any library limits. I do not think a library of 300Gb of flac files is a big thing (13,932 Files, 1,554 Folders).
I paid for this product and I keep attaching crash logs. By the way, still not responses from last reported crash. Yes, it crash less but it crash.

It may not be a library limit but an OS or filesystem limit etc. I changed from SMB shares to NFS shares and some of the directory/filenames really pissed things off so I had to change some of the root directory names for it to stop blowing up. I have had directory names, file names, directory path length issues, some media doing scans have blown things up. It takes me awhile to find the offending file/directory… usually some content from Japan. Usually evolves taking out half of the media and running it to see if it crashes … then trying the other half. Then cutting that half in half until I finally find it. If the process crashes hard at a base level then it wont write any useful debug logs.

Good luck with the issue. I hope it gets resolved.

So no answers on the Plex log crashes. Anyway, since the last few weeks the app did not crash.

But now I’ve a problem on the Download topic of this thread:

I’ve no more than 7 albums downloaded. I went on a travel so when connecting remotely I was surprised to see in the main menu next to “Downloads” a side bar status with "Downloading 1 of 150…
what the heck, I tapped on Download → Music to find out that the few albums were gone and it started downloading again. This happens several times. It seems there is something letting believe to the app that is not in sync or whatever it is is NOT WORKING properly.

Why will keep downloading music that was already downloaded?
How do I know what is downloading? Shouldn’t the app show that info?
What could be the cause to have all music removed and then downloaded again?
It seems to me to be a sync problem.

I would much appreciate someone from Plex commenting this issue, I’m not expecting to have any comments about the previous crashes since the answer was that there were no clues or explanations provided here.

Today I was at work and after restarting my iPhone I noticed the “downloading” message and find out that most of my downloads were deleted. What the heck!!!
Plex guys, could you please fix this BUG!!! also I would appreciate at least a word here.

ANYONE FROM PLEX???

Why in the world the tracks would disappear and start downloading again???

Nobody monitor these threads? Otherwise what are they for?

Anybody from Plex? Between crashes and albums/tracks been lost from Downloads… no words about it?

C’mon guys… some word…

Definitely the Download is not properly working (it keeps syncing or losing the downloaded music and then resyncing) but what is more strange other than that is the fact that nobody from the Plex team has nothing to say.

Plex has nothing to say.

Today 256 tracks removed and downloaded again with no reasons!
Plex, did you acknowledge the problem yet?

Nothing yet? may be by 2023…

As the OP, I see this post generate a lot of positive interest but not much in the way of solutions!

Replying the to an earlier comment (Plex Download Feature - Big Backwards Step - All not Lost? - #4 by MovieFan.Plex)

  1. Plex should never force “alternative methods” on users for viewing or navigating their content; and if you do so due to a design flaw, then there must a good reason - it is seriously unusable when you have an intermittent or no connection.

  2. I understand the theory about a cache being potentially resource intensive but that is inaccurate and indeed users should be allowed to decide how much of their content they want offline. The cache/metadata would simply need to hold minimal information (a) the media hierarchy and (b) details such as cover art. The latter is already stored in the downloads so it’s not true that it would be more resource intensive than the current information.

  3. For any items not downloaded, if you don’t want to cache minimal details and grey them out, then why not omit them entirely? Users will still be able to browse their own content. It’s all about maintaining the same “user model” rather than conflicting it.

In short, can the “downloads” feature be fixed to allow for seamless navigation of user content and if so, when?

In short, can the new Download feature be fixed? Why downloaded music is synced again and again? Why downloaded music disappear and then synced again and again and again?

Can someone from Plex answer that simple question?

We think we’ve identified why Downloads is re-downloading the same things. This should be in a future client update, I don’t know which one.

i am really surprised that there is not a firestorm in the forums about the Download feature. does no one use it?!? So I am a mail carrier and stream music from my plex server all day long. Unfortunately, being on the coast there are many spots where i have no data connection for an hour or two at a time. So the Download feature was an incredible tool to let me continue to listen to stuff while i was in these dead zones. Unfortunately, the disfunction of tool makes it almost completely useless!

A) trying to queue up downloads results in non-stop downloading… .like… it says downloading 500 tracks and it will download 238 of them and then just not do anything at all. (yes, even while leaving plex open and active). often times i will just reboot my phone and try again and this will get me some progress.

B) files that you have already downloaded somehow ‘refresh’ by just straight up getting deleted and redownloaded. unfortunately this usually results in many things just not getting downloaded and lost entirely. albums that were once fully downloaded are now either completely gone from my phone or one or two tracks will remain.

this functionality is absolutely absurd and renders the whole notion of the download feature useless. that seems like a pretty big problem. and i’m shocked there isn’t more discussion of it, and perhaps that is why there is very little reaction from the plex staff. this one little quote from a plex employee has me hopeful… but… 2 months to comment on a post about a problem that has existed since the download feature was first implemented… that’s a bit shocking. can we get a little more attention to this topic?

I had the same concerns as you to respect if Downloads is or not a popular feature. I rely on my Downloaded music. When I’m not at home the app keeps using bandwidth to re-download the music again and again. As you said this is absurd.
How in the world there is no more complains? No idea, but I will guess people got tired due the non response from Plex… and not just on this topic.

But what is much more strange to me is the passivity on Plex employees to respond or give a simple answer like… “Yeah… we heard you and we will investigate”. Nothing until now. How much time until we got the “We think…” … at least they were honest though they are not even sure.

Thank God I found this thread, I thought I was going insane. The same things just download over and over and over again, and then when you’re on the plane with no internet nothing has actually been downloaded / can be played.

I bought a lifetime Plex pass JUST for sync, which also barely worked. Now it’s replaced with downloads which basically never works properly on my tablet. How can this languish this long?
