Server Version#: 1.13.8.5395: Has the DVR always created two files when using the commercial skip function? I just noticed that I have two files for each program - one with commercials and one without. For example, Young Sheldon (2017) - S02E02 - A Rival Prodigy and Sir Isaac Neutron.ts (original) and Young Sheldon (2017) - S02E02 - A Rival Prodigy and Sir Isaac Neutron-comskipped.ts (without commercials). I updated to 5395 the day before noticing this but can’t say if this is how it behaved before. There doesn’t seem to be anything I can find in the settings to control this.
Are you referring to the .grab folder when Plex Commerical Skipper is running? I believe that is normal behavior. Once commercial skipper is done it keeps only one.
Did you disable the ‘Delete’ feature in the Plex server settings?
(Settings - Server - Library - ‘Show Advanced’)
Is your folder with the recorded files not local, but on a network file share? It might not allow file deletion due to some special access permissions.
Do you have this parameter in the Advanced server settings dvrRemoveComskipFiles=0
?

Are you using a custom postprocessing script?
Thanks for the reply. The .grab folder is empty and the extra files are here the next day after recording.
Thanks for the reply. The files are local so there shouldn’t be any permission issues. I am not using anything custom - it is all stock. I will enter the registry item and test.
In the end it appears the problem was caused by file permissions. This was the old story of “I hadn’t changed anything and it suddenly started happening”. I found an error in the PlexMediaServer.log where permission was denied to rename the file. After creating a new directory for recordings and resetting wide open permissions for the entire drive it appears to be working correctly.
Thanks for the help!
Is this command still enabled? I am not home to try it out, but I was looking for this type of functionality to test commercial detection before letting it just run loose on it’s own.
This thread seemed like it might not be around anymore, and it wasn’t listed on the support article.
Sorry, I cannot tell you. You’ll have to test it yourself.
Make sure to use the exact spelling and casing.
I entered the dvrRemoveComskipFiles=0 and it didn’t make any difference. I didn’t try entering dvrRemoveComskipFiles=1 and didn’t remove the =0 command when everything started working again. I just had permission problems caused by synchronization with google drive.
Yeah looks like the command isn’t in place anymore. I just had a test recording run with dvrRemoveComskipFiles=“0” added to the preferences file, only recording left was the processed one.
You want to keep the old files from before it cuts the commercials out? It’s in the preferences file, I was eventually able to do this, but it was a while ago, I no longer use it as I’ve just been removing commercials manually with a free app called videopub. Kind of a pain, but it’s pretty good at cutting right where I want them. We save the automatic commercial removal for shows we really could care less about.
Let me see what I can drudge up for you.

Yeah, it was more so I can see how well it’s cutting commercials. I can leave it running for a week and check the shows. If it’s too aggressive and cutting out portions of the show I still have the raw file as backup. I will probably just try to run a few files through the plex comskip manually through command line. I just happened to stumble on this preference command listed above and figured it was exactly what I needed before fully committing to having Plex remove commercials.
Looks like you have to modify you Preferences.xml and add the setting in their first and then you can get it working.
I find that it is not aggressive enough. It tends to leave some commercials. However, if you are interested in next weeks episode, like at the end of a tv series will sometimes show, it tends to cut that out, but the shows themselves always seem in tact, just maybe some commercials you will still see.

Wait you got it to leave both the raw and cut files? I already had that command in my preferences file and it only left me the cut file still.
I didn’t want to keep both the raw and cut files, just the cut ones. When I set Google drive to sync my recorded tv folder it did something to the permissions which resulted in both files being kept.
Did you change it from 0 to 1? One probably keeps the file while the other does not.
