Plex DVR - Other Tuners?

I noticed that with the new DVR feature, only HDHomerun devices are supported. I’ve been using similar functionality under another product to handle the recording of HDTV shows for years and having them renamed/rolled under Plex. The problem is that HDHomerun devices are quite expensive and for that reason the other platforms have a much larger supported list of hardware. For example, I’ve been using a Sabrent ATSC Hybrid Tuner made in 2011 for close to 5 years and it runs under $50.
So, is there a plan to support other products, or was this built on exclusivity with HDHomerun? It’s good to know for any of us on the fence about spending $150 for one of their devices. If you’ll be expanding hardware, I’ll keep using another platform until you support my hardware. If you will not be supporting other platforms then I have to think about this more.

Thanks!

From the DVR FAQ:

What DVR devices are supported?
Plex currently works with the SiliconDust HDHomeRun (HDHR) line of digital tuners. Compatible models are available for use in many areas of the world. We’ll be investigating the possibility of supporting additional devices as we move forward.

100% got it. But, you guys are being vague at the moment on support for other devices. So, my question is … is this an active development effort at the moment, or something that could take years? If the latter, then it may prompt me to invest in an HDHomeRun device so I can simplify my infrastructure. If sooner, than I may be patient =)

Anything would help!

Support for other devices is something that Plex is very interested in doing. However, what devices those may be is hard to say. Plex chose to start with the HDHomeRun devices because they worked with Plex and provided API calls that Plex could implement. If the device you use has documentation on how it can be controlled by other programs, that could help move things along.

What about support for enigna2 boxes, they have webif and can be fully controlled using API calls, that would be amazing

for enigma boxes

With Windows MCE in it’s final death spiral after more than 10 very good years together, I would love to see the new and exciting PLEX DVR extended to support SAT>IP and especially UK FreeSAT.

Please…don’t leave it too long, there’s a whole other world of opportunity waiting out there beyond HDHomeRun.

Enigma2 support would be amazing!

DVBLink tv server would also be an option. There’s an API available to handle all the needed requests:

Sat>IP should have been the first choice!

It’s an official widely spread standard for domestic distribution of TV signal over ethernet received by SAT broadcasting. For example Panasonic TVs do have a built in Sat>IP tuner. Plex will surely reach much more people with official and open Sat>IP standard which is supported by numerous hardware than supporting HD Homerun hardware only!

Unfortunately, those supported devices are not available in Finland at all nor will they even work here if ordered. Could it have support for Humax set-up boxes?

DVBLink Server support would be aweseome!! I would also appreciate support for a DVB-C USB-Stick.

Any plans to add Vbox TV Gateway? www.vboxcomm.com they offer DVB-T2, DVB-C and DVB-S2 products
