Server Version#: 4.87.2
Player Version#:7.0.23.8111-8c8a6a9b7-Plex (Roku)
I have plex server running in on Ubuntu 22.4 in a Proxmox VM. It has been working fine for a couple years since originally installing on Ubuntu 20.x. Recently I have been having an issue with Plex having the error in the title when playing 4k content regardless if transcode or direct play.
My first attempts to fix included making sure everything was updated. Then I bumped the VM from 32GB, that has been working fine, to 232GB just to make sure no issues would crop up again. Still having the issue. I then made a dedicated folder in my /mnt directory for the transcode based on some info I found from other users. I opened the permissions on the folder to make sure that would not be an issue for testing. Even when direct playing I get transcode file in the folder, but the error still comes up.
I rolled back my VM to a previous snapshot prior to the resize. Went through the steps again, thinking I might have messed up something. This did not fix anything. For the expansion, I did things pretty normally. Made a new partition from the extra space added to the VM and then extended the original install into the new partition and extended the file system. No errors in this process.
At this point I am not sure the error is coming from the server or the roku. Nothing shows up on the roku, only in the server.
This is the error as it appears on the server. The log file is just spammed with this error. Several per second as the movie is trying to play.
I tried to roll Plex back, but apparently apt has no cached versions and looking for all versions just brings me 1.30.x. I am a little surprised. I tried looking on the plex downloads for a version list to plug in one of the 1.29 deb versions, but can not find them. I am not sure if I am just being special or what, but I can not roll it back at all. And I do not have a snapshot of the VM old enough to not have 1.30 on it.
That got it going. Thanks. For the future, is there a place to get all the archive copies in case I need to pull one at a later date? I tried to look for an archive on the download page but could only find the current version being linked.
Thanks again! I will bookmark that one just in case. Not sure why plex does not have an easy to access archive like most devs do. A simple list of download links would be enough.
Its fairly common for people to knee jerk react and try rolling back, which often times just makes the issue worse. By putting a small barrier there it gets those issues fixed with less hassle. The number of legit rollbacks Ive seen is fairly small, especially once a release has been out for more than a day.
Given the package files are very small (usually less than 100 MB), most folks keep the last few and then a known “best version” (for them) in safe keeping.
This way, no matter what happens, they always have a safe restart / recovery point.
I am keeping the 1.29.2 archived. I will likely do the same going forward. Pretty sure this is the first rollback I have done with Plex. So, never got too concerned.
