I apologize if a post like this is taboo or against the rules. Feel free to delete it if that is the case. However, as someone who is unable to join the TestFlight for the Plex Experience Preview (Apple TV), I feel like an actual progress update might not go unappreciated by others who aren’t testing it via TestFlight.
So if I am able to ask, where does the Apple TV version of the new Plex Experience stand in terms -
a) is there a release ETA,
b) milestones (both met and upcoming),
c) roadblocks (aș a programmer it is always interesting to hear what stumbling blocks appear during development), and
d) just curious, but did having a major OS update (apple tvOS 26) happen partway through your development require any major refactoring or rethinking?
Again, if this sort of thing is poo-pooed feel free to delete. Thanks!
You don’t want it. Seriously. Look at the 600+ complaints from Roku users who are extremely unhappy with the new Plex Experience that was forced on them (not beta anymore). I have one Roku and two Apple TV boxes. I am dreading the day when I turn on my Apple TV and I’m forced to use the manure they call the New Plex Experience. I’ve stopped using it on my bedroom Roku soundbar.
Better to test the “New Experience” while in Beta (for Apple TV) so that you’ll know what to expect when the current Plex is one day gone and replaced with the new UI.
I have a Roku, and the Plex Preview for Roku made the transition less painful. I also just purchased an Apple TV and find that since I’m now used to the new Plex UI that I will switch to my Roku when I use Plex.
Plex needs to add more slots for the Apple Test Flight for Plex. Apple caps it at 10,000, but I think (not confirmed) that Plex has set a lower cap.
The main UX problem with the “new experience” on the Apple TV isn’t the redesigned home screen, but the awful custom player that’s replaced the native controls. Even that, though, pales in comparison to the many issues with the playback engine they still haven’t fixed. If you have a TV that supports Dolby Vision, want to use AirPlay for audio output, or just want a stable and consistent experience playing modern video formats, you pretty much have to use Infuse or another third-party app.
