Plex fails to add home videos

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4523 (up to date as of 5/19/2021)
Player Version#:(doesn’t matter)

I am using Plex to make family video available to my family. So far I have added 77 videos, but recently I am having trouble adding new entries.

  • I am using the “Other Videos” library to add new items (hence no metadata search)

  • I am using a consistent format for naming (xxxx - name.mp4) where xxxx is the year of the video and name is the topic, ie Ireland for example. An example: 2000 - Ireland.mp4

Up till recently, simply asking Plex to “scan the library” found the recently added video. Now it seems to be not working. Plex says there are 75 videos in the library. Windows says there are 77 files in the library folder. The two missing are the most recent adds.

I’ve tried messing with changing the names of the files. Doesn’t seem to help.

Can someone help me out here? I’ve been fighting this for over a month now…

Check your system for database corruption:

Did as suggested. Looking at Media Scanner log… Found a section where scanner was looking at file in question. I had changed the file name to be sure that the scanner would find it. Apparently the scanner did see the new renamed file and did something with it… Not clear what… Doesn’t show up in the Plex Home Video list… How do I clean up a corrupted data base?

You can repair, restore from backup, or delete & start over.

See the post I linked. It has the details on how to check if your database is corrupted and links to support articles regarding repair/restore/delete.

Note: Not all SQLITE3 errors indicate database corruption. The log entry will literally contain “database corruption” or “database image is malformed.”

Update :7/19/2021 – So before I tried to tinker with the Plex database or “start over”, I carefully reviewed all the entries in Plex. I found that the new file I was trying to add had wrongly been attached to a previous entry. By editing the information in that file, the new file I was trying to add showed up where it belonged and played as expected (good).

The issue I’m left with is that the wrongly attached Plex file and it’s metadata now shows up in Plex as “unavailable” and will not play. Moreover when I look at “media info” on that file, 6 other files from my database show up. I do not want to delete any of these 6 files since they are legitimate files attached to other entries. Apparently these files were previously “wrongly linked” to this entry also.

So I would like to delete this entry in Plex and start over without rebuilding the entire database. I can’t figure out how to do this for a single entry. Can you help??

You should be able to use Split Apart to separate the files. You can then edit the data for each file (pencil icon) as needed.

Screenshot from a movie library. Should be similar for Other Videos.
