Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing

Thats an interesting idea, and might just work. Though I’ll leave that up to the experts. What I’d like to know is how Plex’s scanning differs from Emby’s. I have that running on the same server, pointing to the same libraries, and there is no issue with scanning at all.

Yeah, something must be unique to the way that the Plex library scan is configured vs. other apps. I have both Radarr and Sonarr running on the same box as my Plex server, and neither of those systems have had any issues scanning the contents of the same Media volume (confirmed that they continue to detect all content as accessible).

I ran through all of Emby’s release notes since 15.0b1 was released and there is not a single entry that points to them making any changes for this scenario. It’s possible they never put it in their release notes, but they’re usually fairly open to their users and provide plenty of detail, which leads me to believe they didn’t need to make any changes in regards to this.

I blew away my DB and re-defined it; letting Plex rebuild it’s database from scratch. OS/Plex revs the same as before. It appears to work, but reverts to TMC nature given time.

Turned off the Mac/M2Pro host and pulled out the (really old) WinTel host which, while slow and ponderous, works as expected under Win10 and Plex v1.41.0.8994. It’s stable and fundamentally functional (after all the Win and Plex updates).

That would certainly address the client time-out issues that sometimes happen when the drives take longer to wake up than expected. This is a long-term issue but less obvious on the new Mac/M2Pro system than the lumbering Win10 backup.

I may have found a potential workaround solution. I’ve found this Apple Support article that explains how to disable local SMB directory enumeration caching in MacOS: Disable local SMB directory enumeration caching - Apple Support (CA).

Following these instructions, I created the nsmb.conf file on my Plex server and added the “dir_cache_max_cnt=0” value. Disconnected and remounted my Media share and then performed a standard library scan and so far it hasn’t marked anything in my Movies library as missing (yet).

I’m going to continue to monitor and will update after a few hours to let everyone know how it goes … but this is promising!

Keeping the finder tabs open to each folder mapped into Plex ( volume/nas/media/movies, volume/nas/media/series, volume/nas/media/etc ) did allow plex to keep all items overnight, with auto scan still enabled.

so this can be a short term solution for probably most users running similar setup. (NAS media, with Mac server)

… aaaaannnd a subsequent library scan after 10 mins has identified missing items again, so the previous successful library scan was probably just due to the recent remounting of the share (refreshing it). The timeout window (or whatever this is) is surprisingly small. :frowning:

My apologies for getting anyone’s hopes up.

I’m seeing an issue on MacOS 15 on Apple silicon. QNAP TX-951. Server is running (upgraded to 1.41.0.8994) where non of the Mac Plex clients shows a media server as available.

Oddly, the AppleTV Plex sees the files fine and plays them as expected.

All files on the NAS are accessible via Finder.

When I access the NAS via browser and open the server a web browser opens and I get the same situation as on Plex on Mac - nothing is visible, no option for a media server.

Cheers

Same as i reported earlier. Works fine of the max m2 pro host driectly even when the TMS cans are seen. Clients, external to the host, break on trying to play those files.

Start an affected file on the host, slide forward enough to get a “continue” prompt for it on the home page. It will then load and play from all clients, so you can rewind to the beginning. Another finger pointing at timeouts that the cached “home” items circumvent via some different mechanism in the code (cached items stored locally?).

I have found that the finder windows get shut down by whatever is causing the drives to disconnect, so I can tell when its happening again because the finder windows close.

When I reopen them again, I’m able to access the files again.

So I don’t think what you found is consistent for everyone, sadly.

I don’t believe most of our drives are actually disconnecting, as multiple people say this issue isn’t applying to Emby or infuse. This issue is for files showing as unavailable in plex but being available otherwise.

if the drives disconnected, that would not be a Plex issue and could be multiple other issues.

If your drives are disconnecting, I would try troubleshooting that issue first.

This is a Plex software issue. This is what drives me nuts about Plex support. They have us exhausting every single thing it could be except them. They don’t have libraries big enough to test properly. And until they start requesting our databases, they’re still trying to find a way to blame someone else.

Simply, it’s how Plex is reading the files and processing them that’s the problem. Full stop.

@aibradford… are you just mapping to the drives through finder, or are you using a 3rd party app like AutoMounter? I’m using AutoMounter and I’m not seeing the drives disconnecting at all.

So I was redirected here from Reddit and am having the same issue.

Gist is that first scan finds everything, but the auto scan or future scans lose a ton of content.

But, one thing I finally noticed is that is is mostly keeping the last 900 files or so. There are some anomalies, but it keeps starting in the Ts and runs through Zs. The large majority are A-S.

Also, the drives have no trouble mounting and stay mounted.

@Speidel… bruh, you gotta chill with this man you’re gonna give yourself an ulcer. I thought you rolled back anyway and are good. So why are you so passionate about this?

The Plex staff in here has never placed blame on anyone else. This is all part of the investigation process. And we’re all diving in to help because it’s literally only affecting a specific setup that only a few of us have. They know it’s related to how they scan, hence the original workaround steps were literally Plex settings. But as they’ve said multiple times, their scanner code is very basic and is not clearly showing what the issue is. I get why they don’t want to rush a fix, they could end up breaking the masses for us, the minority.

@pyrexia welcome to the party!

Quick workaround:

  1. Disable “Empty trash automatically after every scan” in Plex
  2. Keep finder tabs open to the folders for each library affected
  3. Add those folders to login items in macOS

This should help keep auto scans working as expected.

My drives are not disconnecting, as I run sonarr and radarrs and they are not losing files.

It is interesting that everyone’s large libraries are reducing to 996 or very close to that number,

I’ve been managing mine with various workarounds since the first few days, so I don’t know what mine would drop to now. But, when it first started happening, mine was always 1065. Since the commonality now is 996, I’m wondering if this issue is progressing until that number will reach 0.

Thanks for your concern, I’m perfectly calm. This isn’t stressing me out, I rolled back to Sonoma and things are working as they should, And I really appreciate your thoughtful approach to trying to help. I really do.

Here’s the bottom line of where we are… when every staffer is looking at SMB, Apple and Synology to find a solution to the problem, which is all they’ve done so far in this thread, that IS NOT searching within Plex. It means they’re looking for an external problem instead of looking at their own software. And believe me, I get the limited number of users this is affecting, I get ruling everything else out first, but I did that. I spent days troubleshooting before rolling back. It’s why I rolled back.

I hope they start asking for our databases, that’s when I know they’re looking in the right direction. So far that’s not what they’ve done, and that’s all I was conveying. We’re all here to help each other seek a solution, but sadly, it’s not within our purview to find.

I wes ranging between 26K and 90K files missing, depending on how I did the scan. And it only affected one library, which has three times as many files as my Movies library, but less than half the size. Whatever that means, I couldn’t find a rhyme nor reason to this bug,
