Plex Fireside in the Forums

Thanks @BanzaiInstitute for your thoughtful comments here!! I am going to address your comment areas, the first being:

I could not agree more! This is a huge area of focus for us and we are going to continue our efforts to prioritize making the Plex apps on every platform the best that they can be. Right now this is a top priority!

There isn’t anything here that I can argue with, so instead, I would prefer to generally agree with the points being made here. We need to do a better job in engaging and communicating with you and all of the rest of our users. I am guessing that for you as a PM you may understand my next comment better than most - but we will never make everyone happy. However, we can start doing a better job giving at least a response and where appropriate some context to help. This event is a start - but we still have a long way to go - and quite a few ideas to build on this event going forward to try and build on what is being started here!

No, thank you. This is how we get better through discourse like this, so you are helping more than you know. I am also not ignoring the final section, but we are listening and learning here and hope to keep improving to get to the point where we are not only talking about bugs and QOL, but also bigger picture and future roadmap plans!

I generally don’t have any real complaints about PLEX. It is the app I use at least 95% of the time. The lifetime pass was the best purchase I’ve ever made.

If I had one thing I’d like to see an improvement on, it would be the Rotten Tomatoes reviews.

Now that RT has finally been, officially exposed for taking money from big movie companies to give certain movies better reviews. (Which is something most of us have always known.)

I would like to see all RT reviews removed from the App. I still have not “upgraded” my library solely because of this reason.

PlutoTV does a pretty good job of this commercials issue in the right spots.
So, apparently it can be done.
I only use PLEX to watch my own stuff, so not much of an issue for me.

:woohoo: Thanks @jhart05 for the comments here! I am passing along the RT comments for internal discussion!

As we are seeing from some of the comments here, one of the biggest unknowns with Plex is whether long-standing issues or feature requests are going to ever be addressed.

My top issues (in no particular order) include: In Music, multiple-artist support, track-level genre support, and classical music support (including support for multi-track works).

In Photos, lack of map display for geotagged .dng or .tif files, and lack of support for embedded tags in general.

May we finally have some open discussion on when/if these will be addressed?

This is not a question nor a complaint. Just an observation.

Plex overall for us (family and friends) fulfils all our media needs without drama.

I have suggested a few ‘enhancements’ and ‘changes’ in other threads but none are life changing.

However, I must congratulate Plex for persevering with Plex HTPC. When most of us thought that a HTPC app was going to die, it got resurrected and improved.

Sure, it could do with some attention to the ‘pretties’ but I would not want it to turn into a Kodi with excessive customisation options.

I know many others have some real issues with Plex in its various formats and uses so I would hope that Plex as a company do a better job of addressing those issues as it would appear to users that they are ignored.

Whilst Plex has said a number of times it won’t necessarily share where it is going, transparency would perhaps alleviate some concerns.

We, as users, realise you can’t do it all but there are some glaring holes that could be filled.

Thanks @salexes for the great questions!

Firstly for Audiobooks, Both @McWanke and I have started to dig in with users over in Support for audiobooks - #1035 by chrisallen to figure out what users want to see. We are now working to see where we can get this into our Personal Media roadmap!

As for Ebooks, although it’s an intriguing idea, I can confirm that we are not currently working on this as a feature (in an existing client) or as a dedicated client, nor do we have plans on our current roadmap.

Lastly, as for multiple-edition support It wasn’t clear from your question what the shortcomings were, or what was missing from how it works today. I asked internally and it looks like there is some known short comings, specifically around view-state sync for “editions” of movies. I will go back to the team to see how we can close the gap on that. If there was anything else please edit your post, and I will edit my reply here (to keep replies clean here).

There’s no reason to reply to this, it’s just a general suggestion. Please just have a read and then move on to the other folks who expect replies.

It is my strong belief that Plex Media Server and its various clients would greatly benefit from a time of development introspection. Take stock of where you are, from a functional and stability standpoint. Where you have features which aren’t fully functional, note those. Where you have features which do not operate as intended and which are broadly reproducible, note those.

Then, take some time to iron all of those issues out. Take three, six, or 12 months without implementing new features and just stabilize and improve the performance the platform as well as possible. I’m thinking of OS X Snow Leopard here. Apple realized that they had issues with their OS and turned it into an opportunity to correct course.

I’m specifically thinking of some of the more brittle parts of Plex Media Server, such as hardware-accelerated transcoding. It has not been stable for some time and now, after the recent workforce reduction, it has been suggested that y’all are basically relearning everything related to it.

I would go on listing persistent issues, but I don’t believe that’s what this chat is about. I’d just like for y’all to take a step back, realistically evaluate where you are from a technology/development standpoint, and make some adjustments. Take the time needed to get certain functions into a state where they function consistently.

Having said all that, Plex Media Server and its various clients work fine for most of my needs, most of the time. But that last 5-10% can be murder at times.

Thank you.

Cool. I may have said that slightly incorrect. But either way, those “professional” reviews are slanted because they are being paid to give favorable reviews to certain movies.

I don’t want to or need to see them. I have my collection of movies and tv shows. I know why I like them all. I don’t care what some snobby “professional critic” thinks about my taste in entertainment.

I know this has been brought up a few times on the main message board, so I’m not bringing up anything new here.

Bottom line is, no one trusts RT anymore. Improve your app by kicking them off.

It’s the truth, ain’t it!

Looking forward to see where this all goes… I know the community will respond well to any sincere efforts.

Your music wish list is spot-on. IMHO these are very important updates to make Plex a truly full-featured music library. Of all of them, the lack of per-track metadata like genre is definitely my pet peeve.

Or just give me the option to turn off reviews altogether:

Thanks.

I didn’t mean to just bring up my issues – there are a number of feature requests that are approaching, if not exceeding, 10 years of age. At some point, Plex needs to fish or cut bait on some of these, and let us know if they ever plan to consider them. After all, people have voted on those things, and their votes are tied up until Plex makes a decision, or voters decide to take their vote back, or just give up on voting altogether.

Great question! I personally use a Shield and Apple TV in my living room, so I’m keen on expanding Dolby Vision support on Apple devices.

Currently, we support Profile 5 files by using AVPlayer (Apple’s native player) as the playback engine. It’s likely that we’ll do the same for Profile 8.1 files in tvOS 17 once we add support for it. Initially, this support may be limited to MP4 files, as we work on improving how we handle MKV content that currently requires direct streaming for AVPlayer support.

I don’t have much more to add here, other than I’m committed to improving overall playback on Apple TV, and we’re actively working to address issues, like the new audio engine, and stutter on the 2022 4K Apple TV.

They also need to review the forums 5 vote feature request rule. It’s an easy way to dismiss requests.

Yeah, I almost mentioned that, but I’ve been vocal enough on it.

Thanks for the reply!

I am glad to hear that fixes are in the pipeline for the future, including support for DV Profile 8.1 and possibly profile 7.

My post I made in this topic are a wealth of knowledge, though a bunch of it has been edited in. I hope they can help your organization implement support in the future.

Hi there,

For the most part my Plex experience has been great over the years and I wanted to say thanks for all the hard work.

I was wondering if there has been any progress on multichannel support with AirPod Pros on iOS devices. It mostly worked for a short period when the new audio engine was released, but has since been disabled due to a TrueHD audio bug.

Multichannel support for AirPods and Atmos in DD5.1+ support would be great, as it’s really the onyl reason I switch to Infuse from time to time.

I second this. Probably don’t say it often enough. And my frustrations come through too often.

Hi @dklein  I’ve actually been engaging with users on various tvOS playback issues in the forums recently, including the the new audio engine and the current spatial audio behaviour with it. I recently got AirPod Pro 2’s specifically for Plex content, so improving support for them is a personal priority. While I don’t have any major updates at the moment, I am actively investigating these issues and will keep you posted in the forum threads when there is something to share.
