Plex flagging duplicates that are not dupes

I am rather OCD about file naming, and I use a format of () tt<imdb_id> for all of my movies. However Plex has flagged about 200 pairs as duplicates that are not.

example:
Ghost Town (2008) tt0995039
Fast & Furious (2009) tt1013752

Is there a way to just disable duplicate detection? or to have it use the IMDB id provided in the file name?

Uhh… you can’t do that - unless you put that trash on the end in [Brackets] (Plex ignores stuff in [Brackets]).

Public Enemy Number One is poor naming and structuring:

Pay particular attention to TV Show Naming and Structuring.

FileBot (link in my signature) can handle that for you automatically or manually in seconds.

What FileBot can’t do is remove possible embedded metadata in the Title Field of MP4/M4V files. Plex will read this info and prefer it over a perfect file name/structure, but you can combat that situation by moving Local Media Assets to the bottom of every agent list you can find. All tabs in TV Shows and Movies here:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200241558-Agents
Just drag LMA to the bottom of the list and drop it. If you do have embedded metadata this will cure the issue, if you don’t it won’t matter. LMA will do what it has to from the bottom.

Renaming/restructuring is best performed OUTSIDE the library and you may need to write a new bundle for the show or movie so The Plex Dance® was invented:

The Plex Dance®:

  1. remove show/movie from library
  2. rescan library files
  3. empty trash
  4. clean bundles
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200392106-Library-Actions <— scan library files, empty trash, clean bundles
  5. bring names and structures into compliance/Move LMA/etc
  6. replace corrected show/movie into library
  7. rescan library files

All Steps. In Order. No Shortcuts.

Still No Joy?

Not sure what you are referring to as trash, the file naming structure that I use is simple, straight forward and provides unique identifiers for all files. take for example Chaos (2005) which is the name for two different movies tt0402910 and tt0405977 (a complete exact match is rare, more often the leading article varies, The X vs A X or just X) by providing the unique imdb it ensures clarity. I know Kodi already supports this, and I am considering migrating away from them, but Im not sure if its possible give the inability to be specific (to use known database IDs).

Plex does not support reading the IMDB number. That is an interesting idea though. You can add the IMDB number into an nfo formatted file. PMS will read the ID from there. Other wise, you could split the movie after PMS has combined them, then rematch the wrong one. In the search during the match process you can put in the IMDB ID number to get an exact match.
