Plex for Android: Playback through mobile network not possible

Server Version#: 1.20.0.3133
Player Version#: 8.4.2.19372

Every time I try to play a series/movie with the Plex for Android app on my Pocophone F1 through mobile network (port 32400 is available over WAN), I get the following error: “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.”
Sometime the playback just load forever if I start it from the app’s homescreen or through the series view.

The problem does not appear on any other device over mobile network (Samsung Galaxy S10, S8+, Google Pixel 3 XL, …).

The Plex for Android logs are attached.

Your server logs might be more helpful in that case.
That being said… from what you describe it sounds like your mobile might ask the server to provide an optimized version of your video but the server fails to provide it – e.g. because it might not be powerful enough to handle the transcoding. Usually Plex will give you an error message if this happens… maybe some hiccup where it keeps trying but fails to give the message.

There can be tons of reasons why the video should be transcoded…

  • it’s a format not supported by the mobile / the underlying player engine
  • you have set a restriction for playback quality on that mobile (e.g. setting video quality for remote streaming different from how you’ve set it on those other devices)
  • you can also set a remote streaming restriction on your server side – however… as it’s properly streaming on other devices, it seems unlikely that’s the culprit here.

Have you tried disabling the hardware transcoding?
Even without a dedicated video card, Plex will fall back to the iGPU. And while the iGPU in your Celeron is… old and weak  … it’s present.

I’m aware this will still be inconsistent across your devices.

As for your logs. Could you please enable “debug” logs (not verbose!). It appears you had “debug mode” disabled as well – this gives little input to go on with.

If you’re ok to “recreate” the situation for the updated log settings… would you mind to attempt playing the video from both of your phones while outside your home network?

We had a look at those logs.
They show the player fails to decode the video that is delivered by Plex – however it shows no specific details for that error.

This might be related to the phone not supporting the default h264 “level”.
Can you set Maximum H264 Level in Settings > Advanced to 4.2 (instead of the currently set 5.2 and try streaming the video once more?
