Server Version#: 1.42.2.10156
Player Version#: Plex for LG 5.93.2 (Plattform 9.2.2)
I just got a LG WebOS TV and was hoping to get rid of external boxes.
I have an older soundbar only supporting Dolby Digital (AC3) and DTS connected with ARC.
Installed Plex and have setup audio in Plex client and checked Dolby Digital and DTS and left Dolby Digital unchecked since it’s not supported.
TV audio settings set to output TV ARC. Audio set to Passthrough (I have tried auto and PCM as well).
All non Dolby Digital videos fails to start and I get an unknown error pop-up.
Movies with Dolby Digital start without any problem.
If I start a movie with both trueHD and ac3 track it fails with trueHD but if I choose to start with ac3 it starts at once.
It’s like it it ignores that my soundbar doesn’t support eac3/trueHD etc and just tries to send it and fails.
It should just transcode but does not.
Netflix, Disney+ plays with Dolby Digital without any problem.
I watch a lot of anime using PLEX that has ASS encoded subtitles. As a result of PLEX not directly supporting this format, it has to transcode everything. This was working just fine until yesterday. Now, I get the unexpected error message when trying to play anything with subtitles. Other files without subtitles seem to play fine. When I go into the LG PLEX client settings and force Direct Play, the file will play but not display any subtitles.
No idea what caused this to start happening, as neither the PLEX media server nor LG client have been updated recently. Interestingly enough, the same files play successfully with the web client and my iPhone client. So to get around it, I’ve been playing them with the iPhone client and using AirPlay to broadcast it to my TV. Not a great workaround but better than nothing.
I really want this fixed. I can submit logs or whatever is needed.
I noticed that this was the problem for me as well. Had nothing to do with audio codec.
As soon as it wants to transcode something subtitles wants to burn in. This fails.
I can play without subtitles and both audio and video can transcode without any problem. As soon as subtitle gets in the mix and needs to be burnt in it fails.
I have the same issue with TRUEHD audio tracks. If the movie (with TRUEHD audio) is being played on Plex it just exits immediately with a Playback Failed message. This is with no subtitles. I also disabled AC3,EAC3,DTS passthrough in the settings/audio menu.
To work around this problem, I’ve re-encoded all of my anime that has ASS subtitles (almost everything) to h.264 (mpeg) with burned in subtitles. Almost melted my iMac’s CPU and took a few weeks. But now I can watch everything again.
Hoping this gets fixed at some point. Wish I knew if it was the server or the client on my LG TV. Files play fine on my iPhone or iPad with subs.
I have the same issue. Just bought QNED93 and I’m again frustrated by these crappy Plex apps for smart TVs. I have also Samsung QN90A - a lot of other issues there with the app.
Looks like I’ll continue to use my Rpi4 with Kodi.
