Plex for Mac - Player v. 1.44.0 - 1.45.0: Grey Screen on Startup (MacPro6,1 & 7,1)

Server Version#: 1.26.1.5772-872b93b91
Player Version#: 1.44.0.2981-e2d72ac2

After auto-updating to latest version of Plex for Mac player, after launch I am getting stuck on a grey screen with no ability to do anything (see attached screen shot) after the Plex logo is displayed.

I’ve attempted to remove and re-install the app, but with no success. I tested on a secondary machine running same version and did not have the same issue. The only difference between the two is “Automatically sign in” was checked in settings (set to yes/true) on the computer presenting the issue - my gut tells me this has something to do with it, as I have seen this “glitch” before, but was always able to resolve by restarting. (The other machine I tested on which doesn’t present the issue requires selecting user account/entering pin)

Currently running MacOS 11.6.5 (20G527)

Any help would be appreciated… This is my main for use of consumption w/in my household and w/ lack of browser support for .265 codec this is presenting me with a pretty major issue. Thanks in advance!

I hate to do a “me too” but… me too… I’m having the exact same problem… and deleting and downloading a new version of the app doesn’t help.

Ditto. Uninstalled manually everything from the library related to Plex. Restarted. Installed fresh player 1.44.0.2981. Grey screen, cannot do anything. Preferences do not even appear. Random clicks don’t appear to do anything.

MacPro 6,1 with OS 10.14.6.

Mind sharing your client logs?
On a Mac those should be located in ~/Library/Logs/Plex/

Be happy to… I’ll be back at that particular computer tonight… In the mean time can you tell me what directories the Plex app uses so I can “flush” them? Perhaps it’s trying to load an outdated dependency and erasing the directory on the mac would resolve that?

This should be the ones to wipe the client installation:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Plex/
  • ~/Library/Caches/Plex/
  • ~/Library/Preferences/tv.plex.Plex.plist

Hey there - @tom80H Attached are my logs. I did clear out all files related to Plex from ~Library and any other locations when attempting to resolve / re-install the latest Plex for Mac version…

That said, I WAS finally able to get it working by first wiping everything, then finding an old installer package for Plex-1.34.1.2601-ff212e16-x86_64. This worked, but would crash after about 2 minutes, every time.

I then found an package for Plex-1.43.4.2971-aa2133cc-x86_64, overwrote v. 1.34, and it’s currently working. I’d like to get back up to the version prior to 1.44.0.02981, but am afraid to rock the boat…

Thanks!!

EDIT - P.S. If anyone else on the chain would like to try process I did above ^ LMK and I can add the .zip packages for the prior versions (luckily I’m a hoarder  ).

Could you please include links to zip packages just in case?

Sure thing:

  1. Plex-1.34.1.2601-ff212e16-x86_64

  2. Plex-1.43.4.2971-aa2133cc-x86_64

Done…

Thanks… I was able to get this version to start up without issue.

I’m able to download and install Version 1.43.4.2971-aa2133cc of the macOS app, even on top of the latest build from the downloads page and it works without issue… UNTIL the autoupdate happens… any ideas?

How can I turn off automatic updates of the desktop app?

There are is another thread concerning this issue as well that can be found here: Plex Player stopped working on MacPro 2013 - #25 by iamdinux - I also have another thread here: Mac Player Cannot Establish Connection to Server(s) - #8 by iamdinux - I think all of the issues are linked and have to do specifically with the latest update to the client player. We are waiting to hear back from support though. I reached out via the website contact form to billing because we have not gotten a timely response regarding our problems and it looks like more and more users are reporting the same issues.

By chance, are you on a MacPro 6,1 (2013) Trashcan?

@iamdinux - Indeed, I am (on the machine w/ the issue). Can’t speak for the others. Here’s my system info:

There is a way to disable auto-update, but can’t do it from the GUI. Need to make a modification to one of the config files; can’t remember which one off top of head. Try a Google search; if u can’t figure it out LMK and I’ll dig up the thread that has instructions.

Um, none of this seems to work or apply to the Mac Desktop Player. I have been through every single menu and advanced options menus in the Mac Desktop Player and there is absolutely nothing about automatic updates.

As mentioned by @spt5687, “can’t do it from the GUI.

Edit the plex.ini file to disable auto updates. See the thread linked my earlier post for details.

Got the issue too (had to revert to 1.43.4 manually while wiping the whole QtWebEngine folder). It happens on my Mac Pro 2013 too (8-cores / D300). I think it is fine on my laptop, but I would need to double check the version currently running.

Here’s another copy of logs to see if there is anything else or any other insights that might help…
